Did you know the map on the UN flag is an Azimuthal Equidistant projection of the world map centered on the North Pole? 🇺🇳
I re-created it with D3.js and learned to customise the graticule.

Belated #30DayMapChallenge 2025 entry for "projections"

This was a great conversation (Andy has such an encouraging and engaging presence) with interesting examples from Nicola and Ansgar. Well worth a listen.
I did the #30daymapchallenge twice and it almost broke me, but resulted in a wealth of learning experiences and body of work I still draw upon.
NEW EPISODE! I chatted with @nrennie.bsky.social & @ansgarw.bsky.social about the #30DayMapChallenge and took a close look at 5 of their respective works.

I love the idea of replicating existing maps, but I rarely end up doing it. I've thought about promoting something like the #30DayMapChallenge, but in this version people would spend the month doing a few duplications.
Map of the UK showing historic counties, coloured such that no two adjacent areas are the same colour, using four colours in total.
I did something similar for the #30DayMapChallenge a few years ago (the MapColoring package did all the hard work though: github.com/hunzikp/MapC...)
Busy couple of weeks!
Just finishing my preparation for today's Explore Explain episode recording with @nrennie.bsky.social & @ansgarw.bsky.social as we discuss their amazing work for the #30DayMapChallenge
My company has participated in the #30DayMapChallenge in recent years. Maybe some maps here would be suitable.

While I love the #30DayMapChallenge, I couldn't fit it in my schedule. I like the idea of making for-fun-maps based on fixed themes. I created a list of 52 subjects for myself to use over the course of this year to create maps that I can share. You can find it on 52maps.org and join me. #52maps
Wrapping up 2025 with my #30DayMapChallenge, finished in two months. Grouped results show #LEGO leading with 12 maps, traditional #GIS at 11, craft and painting at 6, plus one #AI generated map (1/3 entries used AI tools). Looking forward to my journey of #cartography in 2026! Happy New Year! 🎨🗺️
#30DayMapChallenge | Day 14 OSM | This map challenges the idea that streets belong to cars, even so-called sharrows that still feel unsafe. Using an inverted speed-limit hierarchy, fast roads fade. Bold bike infrastructure reveals how broken and fragmented the biking network is.
#30DayMapChallenge | Day 30 Makeover | During #NACIS 2025, I tried colored-pencil sketching and drew my own #Yosemite map on the gallery panel. Recently, I revisited it by recoloring with watercolor to strengthen the shading and adding some labels. ⛰🖌 Original map: cartoguophy.com/maps/yosemit...
#30DayMapChallenge Day 29 - Raster
Daytime/Nighttime temperature difference in Australia, Jan 2025
Wanted to map something about the country after my trip last month, and land surface temperature is always a good starting point for exploring a place you don't know much about
We created a lot of quick maps during the #30DayMapChallenge! When I was a GIS environmental consultant, I created templates for most of my maps. There was very little time for cartographic flair, so I did what I could via trial and error. This was before I took any carto classes.
A map of Germany in a grid with dots showing the pig farming density in each cell. The map reveals a strong concentration of pig farming in the Northwest (West of Lower Saxony, North of North Rhine-Westphalia).
The German “Pig Belt” is a highly specialised pig farming region in parts of Lower Saxony and North Rhine-Westphalia, accounting for around 60% of the country's pig population.

I revisited the Long Night map I made from the #30DayMapChallenge and expanded it into a poster. Changing the size of a map never goes as smoothly as I think it should. 😂

#30DayMapChallenge | Day 26 Transport | After Atlanta, I made another #LEGO transit map of #Madison Metro Rapid BRT. Smooth lines failed on diagonal routes, so I returned to a pixelated version. I spent really long time designing the capitol building, and hope it serves as the finishing touch! 😊
#30DayMapChallenge | Day 29 Raster | Another experiment in large scale thematic #LEGO mapping. With a 0.1-mile grid, I built a citywide 3D elevation map and colored the top tiles of each cell by category. Colors reference the #Lawrenceville 2045 Character Areas map (www.lawrencevillega.org/241/Maps)
This is me when I get confused about map projections during the #30DayMapChallenge! 😅
#30DayMapChallenge | Day 18 Out of This World | #LEGO #Moon Map. It's fun mapping a totally different landscape with my LEGO approach: abstract, cute, yet roughly accurate. With no oceans on the Moon, I used a uncommon color scheme for topographic maps. Source: Wikipedia #Selenography
I'm really looking forward to chatting with @visualisingdata.com alongside @ansgarw.bsky.social all about the #30DayMapChallenge!

Then S6E6 will be a #30DayMapChallenge special with two fantastic guests, @nrennie.bsky.social and @ansgarw.bsky.social, joining me to explore some of their amazing map submissions for this brilliant and unique challenge, which was held during November.

A map of Germany, separated into its administrative districts. Each district is colored by the number of different area codes that are used on number plates in this particular district. The scale is split into these categories: Just 1; 2; 3-4; 5-6; 7 or more. Less densely populated districts tend to have more distinct area codes.
The first part or the number plate in Germany consists of one to three letters representing the district where the car was registered. Since 2013, there can be more than one area code within a district, and long abolished area codes were reintroduced.

#30DayMapChallenge | Day 6 Dimensions |
I colored my #lasercut #Wisconsin 3D #topographic map. Though the natural HDF wood tone limited the choice of colors, the dark edges did enhance the 3D effect. Watercolor was used to fill up the valleys. (The digital file was shared to local blind school.)
#30DayMapChallenge | Day 21 Icons | This prompt reminds me of the #LEGO #AppleMaps icon I created this summer, which displays Apple Park at Cupertino. Recently, I experimented with another major competitor, #GoogleMaps, though sadly its icon is not a map.
A map quilt showing various maps of Rhode Island.
The #30DayMapChallenge is a wrap! I made a map quilt of my favorite Rhode Island maps from the challenge. I had to resize a few of them to get them all to line up. Had I planned this in advance, I would have alternated between light and dark maps.
