Starting on July 9, 2015, Chinese authorities arrested over 300 human rights lawyers and activists. Since then, many have faced constant surveillance, harassment, and punishment — simply for defending rights. The crackdown must end.

10 years ago today, #China govt detained human rights lawyer #XieYang during the #709crackdown. After torture & release in 2017, he endured years of surveillance & harassment before being re-arrested in 2022. He's now been held 1,277 days without trial.

Many of those arrested during the #709crackdown received heavy prison sentences on trumped-up national security charges. The 8-yr sentence for subversion handed down to activist #WuGan was the longest prison sentence.

Veteran activist #WuGan, one of the first arrested 10 yrs ago during the #709Crackdown on lawyers and HRDs, spent 8 yrs in prison on subversion charges. During his imprisonment, he endured torture, forced medication, shackling, and other forms of ill-treatment.
