Panel 1 - Curley talking over a phone, looking visibly concerned
Curley: Oh, gosh - I'll be right over!

Panel 2 - Curley sees Nellie in bed, reading newspapers. The implication is that though she's sick, she doesn't seem to be.
Curley: I don't get it, you don't seem sick! What's the issue?

Panel 3 - A closeup of Nellie holding onto the paper, explaining to Curley why she's in bed
Nellie: I know I'm not, but the Smiths are nixing hard-earned cash from me - and I'm not getting out of my bed 'til they pay up!

Panel 4 - Curley hops onto Nellie's bed, causing her to flinch. He reveals that he's also been skimped out on money - and the implication is that he's just found out.
Curley: Move over then - if they're skimping, they owe me DOUBLE!

Panel 1 - Nellie is on a ladder, sorting out some of her books. She and Curley (who is offscreen) are having a conversation surrounding it, though it's clear Curley is not really paying much attention.

Nellie: I need a fair bit of help here, Curley. Do you think you can handle the English language?
Curley: Of course - My knowledge of it happens to be one of my greatest assets!

Panel 2 - The aftermath. Curley lies dazed on the ground with a comically thick English dictionary having been hurled straight to his face, leaving a noticeable dent in his head.

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #8 - Now

2024 marked the debut of the #denizensofruckusville webcomic, which features Curley and Nellie as charter characters. In the span of two years, I managed to decipher what I wanted out of these characters. Two strips for an example...

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #7 - The Shift

I wanted something that I would be happy to work on and appeal to my sensibilities, as such the art direction and character design began taking cues from older western cartoons. Lots of iteration. LOTS of it.

A series of head sketches, distinctly labeled as "CURLEY expressions". Notes are also present pertaining to the eyebrows and mouth.

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #6 - Cuteness Takes Its Bow

A momentous occasion - and a fair bit to show. This is actually the point in time where Curley finally gets his name. A familiar face also joins Curley for the first time in this thread!

The original design recontextualized to fit with Console's design. In his clothed attire, he sports a pancho and a hat, which has a feather sticking out of it. His unclothed attire reveals a more rudimentary construction.

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #5 - As Cute As Ever

These designs were conceptualized when I had been in a "we're making a serious story" phase. During this time, the idea of Console and his world were envisioned as a eastern-influenced adventure series.

A scanned sketch of a robot design. The body is split in half because I had been working with Blender for long enough that I had a mental note of mirroring the mesh for the other side.

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #4 - Further Experimentation

A few miscellaneous sketches (and then the models that would be built off of them) of the same robot character, who at this point was given the name "Console".

A scene of a robot, named "Bluey" worriedly running away from two enemies: a robot beartrap and a robot arachnid. They are in a industrial complex, with many wires, containers and lights strewn about.

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #3 - The First Game Concepts

I began to toy around with the idea of making a game with this version of the character during this time. A basic story, enemies and a very rudimentary prototype were created.

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #2 - There's Four Now

The character was redesigned to be shorter and stumpy. The blue version was created first - red, green and yellow variants came along later. They had boring names that suited their color scheme.

8 YEARS OF CURLEY #1 - The First Design

The oldest surviving design for the character, created on this very day. Curley had been initially envisioned as a robot, and lasted that way from much of these earlier designs.

Good morning, it's a pretty special day - it marks 8 years since the first design concepts were made for a character who'd become Curley! IT'S HIS BIRTHDAY!
I'm commemorating the occasion by sharing a few designs and concepts over the years through #8YearsofCurley!
