unfortunately, i couldn't attend #AANZCA24 in person, but at least i got the souvenir
A picture of a conference name tag clipped to a cord below a computer monitor on an office desk. The name tag is black and white and says the attendee's name above a stylised pause symbol and the written text, Pause.
My first conference travel in two years was a short and sweet visit to Melbourne for #AANZCA24. It was wonderful to be back in the same physical space as so many lovely and exceptional colleagues. And I also came home with a little self-care reminder:
Finished up a fabulous #aanzca24 with a fractured portrait starring @kathaesa.bsky.social @nedwatt.bsky.social @inesengelmann.bsky.social … i guess befitting a conference where I presented on visual misinformation?
A wood panelled colonial room with a somewhat inappropriate wall painting of Australian history.
Well USyd’s Holme Building is a very different conference space from RMIT’s very 90s Storey Hall. 1890s rather than 1990s, I guess. #AANZCA24 #ACSPRI24
A quick shoutout to my HDR peers—your research truly deserved more attention. It’s a shame that, so often, the most creative and energetic moments in our lives go unnoticed when people are busy chasing the spotlight. #aanzca24
Me standing at a lectern giving my presentation with the introduction slide behind me. The text reads, "Existing research into content creation on platforms", "Humour as a means to study cross-platform interactions", "Ethnography and analysis methods", and "early findings".
Presented my methods and early findings of my research on Twitch livestream humour across platforms at #aanzca24 earlier this week as part of a PhD candidate panel with Wenjia Tang, @tianyizhangshao.bsky.social, and @yiwenw.bsky.social.

Science Gallery Melbourne to wrap #aanzca24
Thrilled to have presented a paper at #aanzca24 today! I shared my work on developing a web app that allowed research participants to submit close-to-real-time scam data
A really enriching #AANZCA24 as always. Love seeing the strong intergenerational tradition continue with so much wonderful work from PhD and Masters students. Big thanks to the organisers and my brilliant co-panelists ✨
Sorry to be missing this, #AANZCA24 and #JERAA24 cousins, but I’m off to Sydney for my keynote at #ACSPRI24 on Friday… Assuming this Qantas flight ever boards, that is.

Today I gave a paper at #aanzca24 based on my PhD research, where I argue that digital events can be inclusive, accessible, & actually... good. Vitally, these events could be a model for normalising digital and hybrid events ‘post’ pandemic. You can check out my slides here:

Delighted to announce the launch of M/C Journal issue 27.6: ‘#artificial’, edited by Angelique Nairn and Lorna Piatti-Farnell. A real bumper issue, as you might imagine from the theme. #mcjournal
(Should be very much of interest to #AANZCA24 delegates as well…)

It was great to have the opportunity to present on research that I've been working on with @vilkins.bsky.social, @svegaard.bsky.social and @snurb.info from @qutdmrc.bsky.social at #aanzca24 this morning! ☺️
Really interesting #AANZCA24 panel on news engagement this morning. Liveblog here: snurb.info/taxonomy/...
Fabulous (and timely) panel at #aanzca24 on digital parenting. Here @katemannell.bsky.social unpacks screen time discourse, key observation that while the field has largely settled the limitations of this concept, like many other media mythologies the discourse continues unabated in popular culture
Very excited to be at the Digital Parenting #AANZCA24 panel this morning! A stellar line-up of exciting papers coming out of the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Digital Child 🇦🇺
That’s #aanzca24 of course
Started the second day of #aanzca24 with an informative keynote: a walk alongside the Birrarung with Dr N’arwee’t Carolyn Briggs. #Kulinnation
Next up at #aanzca24 @snurb.info presenting our paper on the News Media Bargaining Code and Facebook's Australian news ban. We've used the Facebook URL Shares dataset to analyse this moment here and (attempted to) analyse what also has happened in Canada who copied our policy.
Thank you so much again to the #AANZCA24 organisers for the kind invitation to be one of the conference keynotes, and to the audience for their attention and great questions + feedback 🫶🏼
A big #AANZCA24 panel with big questions around Internet and technology governance. Liveblog here:

Great #AANZCA24 session on the Voice to Parliament referendum, Indigenous truth-telling, and Indigenous data sovereignty, including a paper by my @qutdmrc.bsky.social colleague @kathaesa.bsky.social.

Go @ysabel.bsky.social! Sounds like a truly excellent keynote at #AANZCA24, I'm sorry to have missed it, but having read the book, I know it would have been outstanding!

RMIT Storey Hall, a slide with "The Platform Paradox, rethinking youth + social media debates" on the title
@ysabel on stage in front of text on a slide
Fantastic #aanzca24 plenary by @ysabel.bsky.social on the platform paradox which rejects the simplistic binary safe/unsafe framing of youth social media use. A powerful antidote to the polemic pop-psych airport book discourse. A great summary by @snurb.info over here: snurb.info/node/3260
What an excellent #AANZCA24 keynote on young people and social media by @ysabel.bsky.social.
If only @albomp.bsky.social and his pearl-clutchers could be made to listen to this, rather than falling prey to utter charlatans like Jean Twenge and Jonathan Haidt.

@ysabel.bsky.social about to keynote on youth and social media. Excellent timing for the current Australian political moment #AANZCA24
Very excited to be heading to #aanzca24 this morning - I’ll be there after dropping in to chat videogames, regulation, and youf on the Conversation Hour on ABC Melbourne.
