Gov. Gavin Newsom's signing of #AB288 effectively preempts federal law, allowing California workers and organizers to bring workplace complaints or charges directly to a state-run agency and sidestep the dysfunctional National Labor Relations Board.

#AB288
A bill I helped champion, #AB288, got signed into law today. Feels really good. It'll make a huge difference for California workers. It can't rain all the time.
As @lorenagonzalez.bsky.social president of @californialabor.bsky.social says, now that #AB288 is law, "California workers will no longer be forced to rely on a failing federal agency when they join together to unionize." This is a LANDMARK WIN!
THIS IS HUGE! @governor.ca.gov just signed #AB288 into law, guaranteeing California workers A REAL RIGHT TO A UNION! This is the most significant labor law reform in nearly a century! #AB288 returns power to the workers joining together to unionize! 💪
🚨 California Labor showed its power 💪 tonight with the passage of #AB288! This bipartisan bill to make sure CA can step in and enforce the right to organize has now passed both houses with a supermajority and will soon be on @governor.ca.gov desk! California workers deserve a REAL RIGHT TO A UNION!
California supports our right to organize. Support AB 288.
Yesterday, the #CALeg Senate Judiciary Committee passed #AB288, which gives our state the power to recognize unions and rule on labor disputes when greedy billionaires use delays to take away our rights. #AB288 lets California cut through the red tape and deliver justice for our workers.

A correction to our previous post: Simboa Wright is vice president of SEIU 721. Here he is, speaking out on behalf of #AB288, which gives California workers a real right to a union.

A large group of union activists along with Assemblymember Tina McKinnor pose for a photograph outside the California Capitol.
Today, #AB288 successfully passed out of its first Senate committee. Because when we fight, we win. And we won't stop fighting until AB 288 is an enforced law.
And then there was Rene Rapp, of the Boilermakers Local 549. If the federal government won't respond to union petitions, then the State of California must, and that's what #AB288 is all about.
Also speaking at today's #AB288 rally was Jessie Munguía-Moreno, an Amazon Teamster who is fighting for fair pay and better treatment and a real right to a union.
And closing is out is Vanessa Valdez, an Amazon worker from the city of Industry, urging everyone to stand together and fight for #AB288.
And here is Melissa Beede of CNA, who spoke about the urgent importance of a bill like #AB288 to protect the right to organize.
Here is Janeé Roberts, a second generation Amazon employee who is fighting for a fair contract. She deserves a real right to a Union, which #AB288 provides.
Here is Peter Finn, president of the Teamsters Joint Council 7, speaking about the importance of #AB288.

Yesterday, 68 California lawmakers, including Democrats and Republicans, voted to pass #AB288 off the Assembly floor and to the Senate. It's time to guarantee working Californians a real right to a union! AB 288 does that!

Assembly lawmakers vote to approve AB 288, giving workers a real right to a union.
"Today, Assemblymembers did the right thing and stood with working Californians who want to unionize against union-busting billionaires. This isn't a Democratic issue or a Republican issue; this is a working class issue. I am pleased to see lawmakers on both sides of the aisle standing up for what's right." - Lorena Gonzalez, President of the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO
The entire California Labor Movement came together to lobby legislators on #AB288, and it just passed the Assembly floor with overwhelming, bipartisan support. California must stand up to make sure the right to a union is protected for all workers.
🚨 Trump / GOP’s killing unions—we’re fighting back!
Join us JUNE 18 in Sac to pass AB 288: CA Right to Organize Act—enshrining union rights in CA law no matter what Trump does.

A special thank you to all the lawmakers who signed on as co-authors for AB 288!
#AB288 was passed out of Assembly Appropriations and is now headed to the Assembly Floor. Thank you to all our Assembly co-authors!
This decision is a good reminder of why it is so important to pass California #AB288 (McKinnor), which would allow the state to enforce the right to organize. Workers have a state & federal right to unionize, what good is an unenforced and unenforceable right?
Billionaires want to take away workers’ right to organize. AB 288 protects it.

My #AB288 respects federal labor law, but affirms that if California workers are unable to get a remedy at the federal level, California can act to protect a worker’s fundamental right to organize.
The right to join a union and bargain collectively is essential to the state’s economic security and the human dignity of all California workers. My #AB288 ensures that California workers can continue to exercise this right.

@asmtinamckinnor.bsky.social's #ab288 is a pretty bold bill. It basically makes a backup National Labor Relations Board at the state level.

I’m so proud of Brian Weston & Janee Roberts who have been leading efforts to help Amazon workers unionize, for coming to testify in support of my #ab288 which will protect a worker’s right to organize across California.
More than a century ago, American workers fought and died to win the right to organize and collectively bargain. Today, more workers than ever say they want to be part of a union. Yet workers who try to organize are routinely intimidated and fired while they attempt to unionize and face corporations unwilling to bargain even once the union is established. AB 288 ensures that workers can enforce their right to organize and build a better life as federal labor law was intended to do. - Lorena Gonzalez, President of the California Federation of Labor Unions, AFL-CIO
Workers have the right to organize. PERIOD. #AB288 by @asmtinamckinnor.bsky.social ensures that there's a backstop for all CA workers trying to organize! @teamsters.bsky.social
