How this Aboriginal Australian family uses traditional art to share their faith The Bird family — an Aboriginal family of artists living in the remote red desert of central Australia — has long used their people’s artistic tradition to preserve a vibrant and visual history of their homeland and ancestors’ stories. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the family has also adapted their people’s art practice — called “Altyerre,” or “dreaming” in English — to spread forth and testify of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to Aboriginal Australian communities in a shared visual language. Three members of the Bird family came to a media event held Thursday in Salt Lake City for an exhibit showcasing their work. “Whole communities (in central Australia) have been baptized because (the family) shares” their faith through art, exhibit curator Laura Paulsen Howe said at the event. Paulsen Howe discovered the Bird family’s artwork years ago and played a key role in helping their artwork arrive in Salt Lake City, where it is now on display at the Church History Museum’s newest exhibit — “From Above: Aboriginal Australian Art from the Bird Family.” “I feel happy when I do paintings,” Gary Bird Mpetyane of the Bird family told the Deseret News...

Mauk Donnabhain (@maukdonnabhain) I'm thinking this morning about a podcast I listened to on BBC Sounds yesterday, part of a series called Soul Music where they take one song and interview people the song means a lot to, for whatever ...

I'm thinking this morning about the Australian singer, Dyagula, who translated a Bob Dylan #song into #Wiradjuri, a 65,000-year-old #Aboriginal language.

She speaks passionately about the role #language plays in a #culture, and how she would like to reclaim that.

What is the future of Aboriginal ranger work for the South Coast? Just over five hours south of Sydney, dozens of Indigenous rangers gathered for a three-day forum – the first ever ranger conference for the far South Coast. Taking place at Mystery Bay, the event is surrounded by significant Dreaming sites – the Mother mountain Gulaga and her two sons, the island Barranguba and smaller mountain Najanuga. For Yuin Djiringanj Elder Warren Foster, seeing the intergenerational cohort makes him feel "proud and deadly". “It’s good to see all those younger rangers coming together. Connecting together and learning off each other," he told NITV. “They’re learning a lot about looking after Country, looking after Mother." Over 50 rangers from six of the South Coast’s Local Aboriginal Land Councils (LALCs) attended the summit, representing ranger programs at various stages of development. Aboriginal ranger work covers a variety of land management tasks, including cultural burning, monitoring threatened species and managing sacred sites. This summit is a mixture of LALC delivered skill-sharing workshops and other expert demonstrations, including thermal drone imagery to track pest and endangered fauna, weed identification, cultural mapping and using virtual reality headsets for surveying cultural sites. Hosted by NSW South East Local Land Services, the event responds to growing investment in...

'Sleeping' Indigenous burning technique awakens in Cape Hillsborough A practice that has helped care for land for more than 60,000 years returns to Yuwibara Country in north Queensland.

Is there evidence that #culturalburning has stayed the same for 60k years?

Indigenous people adapted techniques!

They may not have formally experimented but it's likely #Aboriginal people did what they felt like & repeated what worked.

Australia: Worsening conditions for Aboriginal workers and youth in latest "Closing the Gap" report The 2026 “Closing the Gap” report provides another stark picture of the deepening social crisis confronting Aboriginal workers and youth. While the Albanese Labor government has presented the report as evidence of small progress and record “investment,” the data points to a very different reality. Nearly two decades after the “Closing the Gap” program was first introduced by the Rudd Labor government in 2008, only four of the 19 national targets are on track to be met by the 2031 deadline. Most are improving only marginally, while four key indicators are moving decisively backward. These findings again underscore the widening gulf between official rhetoric and the lived conditions facing Indigenous people. Moreover, by presenting inequality as a “gap” between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, the annual reports divert attention from the broader erosion of wages, housing and public services affecting the working class as a whole. These are conditions produced by the capitalist system, which concentrates wealth in the hands of a minority while imposing deprivation on the majority. Presenting the report to parliament, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese declared he was “not contemplating failure.” He proposed continuing the existing arrangements and highlighted partnerships with Aboriginal organisations. Albanese’s remarks obscure the reality...

Know Your Rights: A Community-Led Shield for Aboriginal Families Against the Child Protection System Readers please be advised that this article contains mention of instances of children being taken from their families. The child ‘protection’ crisis Every year, more Aboriginal children are removed from their families and communities by Australia’s child protection systems. In NSW, the number of Aboriginal children entering out-of-home care (OOHC) rose by 25% from the previous year. Across Australia, there are close to 20,000 Aboriginal children living in OOHC, with thousands more on guardianship orders. Nationally, the restoration rates are dismal, with only about 15% of children being reunified with family. In NSW, restoration rates have declined by more than 40% over the last decade. Too often, young people ‘age out’ of care, abandoned by the system and forced into unstable housing, homelessness, and poverty. These are not just figures- these statistics represent the thousands of children displaced from their home with loving family who desperately want them back. Child protection systems are failing our children, families and communities. This truth is not only highlighted in the statistics, but through the dozens of reports, inquiries, and reviews that have exposed this fact for decades. However, this failure is by design, and for the benefit of the colonial agenda. Aboriginal leaders...

Canada signs Aboriginal rights, fishing and marine management agreements with Musqueam The federal government has released details of recent agreements with the Musqueam Indian Band recognizing Aboriginal title over an area potentially covering much of Metro Vancouver. The agreements do not have any effect on privately owned land, according to the government. The office of Crown-Indigenous Relations Minister Rebecca Alty said in a statement the agreements instead provide "general recognition" of Musqueam Aboriginal rights and title within their traditional territory, while establishing a framework for future negotiations on "how and where those rights and title could apply." In addition to a 30-page rights recognition agreement, the ministry provided copies of a marine management agreement and a fisheries agreement with the band that were all struck last month. The rights agreement says it does not "create, amend, establish, abrogate or derogate" from Musqueam title, nor does it constitute a treaty or land claim. While the agreement does not include a map of the title area, it defines Musqueam territory as spanning from Harvey Creek in the Howe Sound east to Indian Arm and down to the Burrard Inlet and English Bay, all the way south to the Fraser River, encompassing much of Metro Vancouver. CBC News has reached out to the Musqueam...
