I was glad to present on "Good News from Metascience" at #AIMOS2024 where I pointed out several positive trends or improvements that metascientific research has enabled in science and policy. Slides here osf.io/swfqk

“Retractions are everywhere …And that’s good news.”
- Ivan Oransky

Even the good news at this conference is a little backhanded!

Amazing talk on wrongful convictions by @barbobrien.bsky.social last night! Love learning from different fields.

This slide got me, the majority of exonerations occur due to perjury/false accusations (orange) or official misconduct (purple).

A fantastic and very insightful plenary by @barbobrien.bsky.social at #AIMOS2024! Whether it's wrongful convictions or academia, common obstacles to preventing, detecting, and correcting errors remain. #metaresearch

A better how: notes on developmental meta-research  - Busara What does it mean to strive for a ‘better how’ in the way research is produced, implemented, and disseminated in international development?

For #AIMOS2024, my team presented on research to improve research in global development, or developmental meta-research.

This new subfield still works to improve research, but not just its replicability.

We outline an agenda in our edited book, “A Better How”

A great plenary at #AIMOS2024 on the state of #metascience, and how it has expanded and diversified over the past 5 years. An exciting place to work in:)

Infographic discussion primer about paper mills. It explains, for example, that paper mills are a toxic business model that preys upon the perverse incentive structures of academia. A diagram of a conveyor belt explains how shoddy papers are produced, and then sold to authors, using AI, and by manipulating editors and publication processes.

Friendly request to people at #AIMOS2024, since many of you work on paper mills: Pls tell me how I could make this even better. If there were a page 2, what do you think it should say?

4. Love the point about how crazy it is to think that science-policy should be developed by ‘singularly brilliant’ individuals such as Nobel prize winners.

James Wilson’s plenary:
1. I prefer “metaresearch” to “metascience”. Better describes full range of subject matter.
2. Discipline is older than a century! Francesco Redi in the 17thC was obsessed with replicating rather than creating new experiments.
3. Good joke about parking spaces.
