Pardon my ignorance. I just learned about the Academic Publishing in Europe Conference, this year #APE2025. I am so glad that #openaccess is being seriously discussed, but where do we stand now? We need big steps to reach equity, accessibility and affordability in publishing.

Final day at #APE2025 included panels on open science, research funding and impact, startups to watch, protecting trust in science – and now closing remarks from Maria Leptin (European Research Council). Thanks to all the speakers, organizers and guests. Auf Wiedersehen!

THANK YOU @ludowaltman.bsky.social "All evaluation is subjective." YES YES YES. Really appreciate someone else saying this. #APE2025

7 3 0 0

Pushback on @ludowaltman.bsky.social statement of "too much eval." Depends how you define it: there is continuous feedback on performance and that is important for how researchers perceive their future in academia. #continuousfeedbackisessential (SR: problem = PIs will say pubs pubs pubs" #APE2025

@ludowaltman.bsky.social we have to decide WHEN to eval: It's $$$. We are too invested in micro-eval. (peer-review - closed). No capacity for the MACRO eval for big decisions - who to appt, hire, etc. Need to scale down investment in peer-review of small items #APE2025

@tanitacasci.bsky.social "transparency means reporting on the outcomes of recruitment/promo rounds. We've reported in aggregate on outcomes to demonstrate that eval methods are yielding outcomes that further our strategy." #APE2025

How are institutions thinking of comprehensive eval that balances metrics/indicators with substantive qualitative assessment. @tanitacasci.bsky.social @ox.ac.uk "We ask researcher to provide short list of "outputs." The researcher decides. Doesn't have to be pubs. Explain contribution." #APE2025

2 2 0 0

"Research community" extends beyond researchers/acads themselves - large community enables research, not just the acads themselves. "Oxford is very much post-JIF. University of Glasgow is the same. This is the direction of travel in the UK." @tanitacasci.bsky.social #APE2025

@ludowaltman.bsky.social @unileiden.bsky.social most metrics are ⬛ that no one understands -- researchers or assessors. AI makes this worse. We need transparent metrics - fully #opendata to understand metrics. barcelona-declaration.org/conference_2... encompasses this #openscience #APE2025

@ludowaltman.bsky.social @unileiden.bsky.social JIf is not entirely gone - this session is about data-driven benchmarking. We have historically relied on "metrics" for assessment - "we need to move away from OVER-reliance" See COARA, DORA - metrics should be embedded in QUAL processes #APE2025

"We might be at a post JIF world" SR: definitely don't agree. Institutions speaking are on the leading edge (👏👏👏👏). Fantastic but definitely a fraction of the fraction.

As someone working as a researcher, this does not surprise me at all. There are overt pressures to collaborate more across institutions as well as less overt ones. All push in that direction. #APE2025
