I had two flights booked to get to LA for #APEXTECH this week. The Delta flight above was the first. A JetBlue flight from Boston tomorrow was the second. It just cancelled as well.
I was supposed to moderate two panel discussions, but I can't get to LA to do it. Ugh.

United 757 parked and ready to board at LAX.
Sun streams through a half-opened window shade in row 1.
Chicken, rice and salad, it’s what’s for dinner.
LAX sign in big block letters in front of the airport on a gloriously sunny day.
Flying the venerable United 757-300 from LAX to IAD after an extraordinary #APEXTECH in Los Angeles. It seems fitting to get a nostalgic taste of the past after United’s director of IFE, Dominic Green, detailed the carrier’s future this morning. Full presentation: www.youtube.com/watch?v=XCMd...
Giant LAX letters under road signs for arrivals and departures at the airport. The control tower is visible in the background.

Orange-ish rose in bloom, with a tall glass facade building behind it.
Purplish roses blooming. The old LAX control tower rises above the garden.
Wrapped up my two panels at #APEXTECH this morning and walked over to LAX for the trip home.
I included stops at the 9/11 memorial and the rose garden at the old control tower.

Hopping across the country with Southwest Airlines today, headed to #APEXTECH in LA. Hoping to stretch out for a nap at least part of the trip. Plenty of legroom for that in the exit row window.

Also notes that timeline for content loading is slower today in a fully digital environment, and the process is more expensive, than when they were duplicating physical tapes 20+ years ago, "because there are more middlemen in the supply chain feeding frenzy."

Man presenting on stage
Patrick Brannelly of Emirates delivering the afternoon keynote at #APEXTECH:
"If you can't see a way to improve anything, you're not looking hard enough or you're not the right person for the job."
I really like him.

I am not willing to tolerate that story being spun with no pushback on what's actually real and possible.
At least no one has suggested that the metadata content be stored on a blockchain. I might've burned the building down at that point.

One studio just mentioned a synopsis was altered to include something that was explicitly excluded originally and the filmmaker saw it and was pissed. Rightfully so.
"You can train it."
NO, YOU CANNOT!
I just interrupted the panel. Could not stand it anymore.

"We'll just warn the consumers that the descriptions are generated by AI, so they'll forgive us if the results are terrible."
🤮
#APEXTECH #PaxEx
Now sitting through an "AI" session re content descriptions. What about hallucinations? "We have SLAs." 🙄
Can't AI do data entry for us? As if that's AI and not a simple data import. Or keystroke scripting.

Kicking off #APEXTECH in LA this morning, as Ekrem Dimbiloglu of Delta talks up the SYNC program and some interesting stats. Among them, 2 million new SkyMiles members signed up because they wanted free Wi-Fi on board, 5,000 each day. And 90% of pax engage with the IFE screens.
