Good afternoon from the #APPGIFI meeting in @ukparliament.parliament.uk chaired by @jessbrownfullermp.bsky.social. The APPG was reconstituted in the AGM before the public segment of the meeting, with the full name of APPG on Infant Feeding and Inequalities restored

A good summary of @wbtiuk.bsky.social’s report card for the UK on ten policy & programme indicators ⬇️ TLDR: not much progress since the 2016 report & the UK is in the bottom 25% of countries. Implementing the recommendations of the @cmagovuk.bsky.social report on BMS would be a great step #APPGIFI

Sorry to miss the rest!

In answer to questions about the #APPGIFI, @jessbrownfullermp.bsky.social says the aim is to have these meetings quarterly going forward, hopefully in this same hybrid format. They don't have access to the old mailing list so they will start a new one and share details

Rachel Smith: Parents could save hundreds by switching to a lower priced brand (£300-500/baby's first year). Prices rose 29-59% from 2019-2023. Some prices feel in 2023-24 but almost all at or above prices at start of 2023. Prices do not vary much across retailers #APPGIFI

Screengrab from Rachel Smith's presentation. Text: The market is highly concentrated, and manufacturers appear to compete primarily on brand, rather than on price. Highly concentrated market (top 3 manufacturers account for 90-100% of supply, largest has 50-60%). Although barriers to entry & expansion are not insurmountable, these barriers together significantly reduce the likelihood of disruption to incumbents. Manufacturers appear to compete primarily on brand reputation, rather than price. Retailers do not strongly constrain manufacturers' prices and retailer price competition is limited
