We recently celebrated the 250th anniversary of our Army and on July 4th, we celebrate our Nation’s 249th birthday. One year older than the nation it defends, the United States Army is dedicated to fighting and winning the nation’s wars. “This We’ll Defend.”

At the #Army250 parade in DC, some fellow Americans showed a certain lack of respect for free speech. It's almost like they thought that this public event, on the Army's 250th birthday, at the Monument, was their own private MAGA-fest. Nope.

Amy, showing much greater situational awareness than I was, called an audible, and we retreated. The cops had told us earlier that if we needed help, to flag one of them down; when we did, the officer told us that we were asking for it by being there with signs. mmmm... ok, thanks. #Army250 #NoKings
At a certain point, we'd had enough, and headed for the exit. The only exit was a bit of a choke point—zigzag steps to a bridge over 14th St. The crowd had grown surlier; as the crowd became more dense as we approached the steps, a small group of gentlemen screamed epithets at us. #Army250 #NoKings
Someone yanked my sign from my hands and ran off with it, but it was returned a few minutes later by one of the several people who were clearly quietly looking out for us, an effort that Amy and I deeply appreciated. #Army250 #NoKings
It was roughest by the Jumbotrons; Amy and I really felt like we were walking into the lion's den. We were yelled at pretty consistently. Some brave man popped Amy's sign out of her hands, where another brave, brave man stomped on it. #Army250 #NoKings
So, here were the rougher interactions:
One gentleman got in my face about disrespecting the Virginia flag at an inappropriate time. Another gentleman joined the conversation and a vigorous exchange of ideas ensued. #Army250 #NoKings
We only saw about a dozen protestors. The journalist-to-protestor ratio was as high as I've ever seen; we must have been stopped by reporters a dozen times for remarks or photos. #Army250 #NoKings
The overall level of crowd hostility was roughly 50% of the level of what you'd face as an enemy fan at Nats Park. Not pleasant, but manageable. About two-thirds of the people who interacted with us had something colorfully critical to say; the other third were warmly supportive. #Army250 #NoKings
Also worth noting: Trump threatened "very big force" against parade protesters—and, like always, chickened out. I mean, I'm glad I still have all my teeth today, but making big tough-guy threats and then ghosting is the softest move there is. Just weak. #Army250 #NoKings #Pathetic
There was one moment where an MPD officer took a firm grip on me, told me that I was being thrown out of the park, and walked me about a block away, where he and colleagues told me they'd done it for my safety. I'd not been feeling unsafe. #Army250 #NoKings
Worth noting that the Metropolitan Police Department, Secret Service, and other law enforcement working the event were the utmost professionals. They didn't blink at the protest signs Amy and I carried. Not for a moment did I worry that they were going to violate our speech rights. #Army250 #NoKings
I'll note that the progressive org I work for was among those that firmly discouraged people to protest the parade. And I'm very proud of my chain of command: When I announced my plan to ignore that guidance, my boss was clear that he wouldn't dream of interfering. #Army250 #NoKings
I’m not known for taking direction well. So when Trump threatened “very big force” against anyone protesting the parade, I had to show up. This is *my* town. *My* taxes paid for that spectacle. I’ll protest there if I god damn well please.

Progressive groups had organized "No Kings" rallies around the country, but placed the DC area's many rallies everywhere *but* the parade route.
Perhaps the single most shocking thing about the day is that progressives *actually listened*; very few protesters came to the parade. #Army250 #NoKings
