Had the best time in Edinburgh with @rebeccagrut.bsky.social and other cool people! Poster presentation at the #ASABWinter2024, drinks at the Dome, shopping at the Christmas market, topping an already great week off with making squirrel friends at the Royal botanic garden! 🐿️
We hope everyone had a great #ASABWinter2024 conference last week ☺️ Attendees, we’d love to hear about some of your highlights and/or what you learned!
We’d also love to hear from the speakers - what do you hope people took away or steps you suggest we should take as researchers?
It's been a few years now since @tizianasrdoc.bsky.social and I collected data for the first @manydogsproject.bsky.social 🦮🐶🐕🦺 and it was great to see Tizi present about how this relates to addressing biases in animal behaviour at the #ASABWinter2024
Had a great time at #ASABwinter2024! Bonus points for spending the weekend soaking in the Christmas charm of beautiful Edinburgh 🎄✨ Now back to France to tackle the final week before the holidays. Almost there!
If anyone would like a little more background, and the list of references that were mentioned in this talk, then you can find it here:

I have just attended my first of many conferences to come. #ASABWinter2024
It has been a very interesting and inspiring experience, thank you to all the organisers for putting on such an amazing event.

It was so great getting to do #ASABWinter2024 with my bestie @milliejohnston.bsky.social 🥰 I’m still exhausted from being ill early in Dec, so it was great having someone to support me there ❤️ Conferences are such a busy time for me!
A screenshot of the book cover "The Female Turn: How Evolutionary Science Shifted Perceptions About Females", by Malin Ah-King; the cover has a green background with a close up of the head of a female peacock. The title is written about midway down the cover in white letters on a teal rectangle
As always, I left #ASABWinter2024 with a very long (and very much anticipated!) reading list, but this felt like a good place to start - "The Female Turn" by plenary speaker Malin Ah-King
(for those also at the University of Aberdeen, the library has an online copy!)
This isn't Wisconsin-related, but biases in scientific research, including conservation science, need to addressed.
What a neat conference; hope I can attend someday in the future! #ASABWinter2024
Thoroughly enjoyed #ASABWinter2024! Engaging talks explored biases in animal behaviour, with interesting discussions on open science (e.g., pre-registration in ethology), metadata, and standardised databases for comparative research. Can’t wait for the Spring conference! @asab.org
ASAB logo, but make it christmassy! Christmas hats added!
And talking about Christmas version, have you seen the @asabeducation.bsky.social logo? Just fabulous!!! @asab.org #ASABWinter2024

thanks #ASABwinter2024 for a fantastic meeting
this marks the end of my term as ECR rep on ASAB council 🥲
staying connected with the ASAB community while I focus on human behavioural ecology—plans for more research on FEASTs (Foraging Ecology And Social Ties) in non-human systems already brewing 🤓
Thank you for a wonderful conference 👏🏼🙏🏻

Absolutely enjoyed #ASABWinter2024. Extremely important topic (addressing bias in research), insightful talks, welcoming, inclusive, and diverse community, and a beautiful city. Learnt so much via interdisciplinary communication. A huge thanks to the amazing organisers and audience.
Always inspirational to hear @nicolakoyama.bsky.social:let's overcome barriers to collaboration together! #ASABWinter2024 @asab.org
Fabulous talk by @ljerkaostojic.bsky.social #ASABWinter2024 on the illusion of science in animal cognition! And thanks to her I learned about themanyfishes.github.io ManyFishes and ManyManys...🐟#cognition

the edinburgh christmas lights as seen from princes street gardens. the word edinburgh is spelt out in yellow-gold lit up letters. behind this you can see the ferris wheel lit up in blue and purple and the helter skelter lit up with white lights. the night sky is almost pitch black and the foreground of the photo is also black contrasting with the christmas lights
a lecture screen with the title "language barriers to the generation of evidence by non-native english speakers". underneath is a graphic of a running field track with graphics of two runners - one in blue representing a native english speaker and one in orange representing a non-native english speaker. the routes for both runners have different sized hurdles in their respective colours, the hurdles significantly larger for the non-native english speaker. the first hurdle is reading: non-native speakers need 91% more time to read a paper. the next hurdle is writing: non-native speakers need 51% more time to write a paper. then paper rejection: the frequency of language related rejection is 2.6 times higher. then paper revision: the frequency of language related revision is 12.5 times higher. then presentation: non-native english speakers need 94% more time to prepare and practice. in addition, 30% of non-native english speakers often decide not to attend a conference and 50% of non-native english speakers often decide not to give an oral presentation. the speaker/researcher is stood behind a podium in front of the screen
a lecture screen with a slide titled "fieldwork location and lead author affiliation". underneath it has the text "in over 35% of studies there was no author (regardless of first/senior/collaborator) from the continent where the study was conducted) and two maps showing 1) studies per continent (in order of frequency: africa, europe, north america, oceania, south america, asia, antarctica) and 2) first author affiliation by continent (in order: europe, north america, oceania, asia, south america, africa, antarctica). the speaker/researcher is stood behind a podium in front of the screen
a lecture screen showing a title slide "biology but make it gay: a case study teaching queer and feminist perspectives in biology to first year undergraduates". the speaker/researcher is stood behind a podium in front of the screen

Finally getting around to making a bluesky account after attending the amazing #ASABWinter2024.
Hi! I'm Rebecca, I'm doing an #MRes in Animal Behaviour at the #StAndrewsUni. I'm studying resource theft in captive Gentoo penguins! 🐧
Fantastic discussions yesterday! Thank you to everyone who stopped by to see the poster. #ASABWinter2024
Person with long brown hair wearing a black collared shirt, black leggings, and black boots, standing in front of a scientific poster mounted on a green background. The poster title reads "Understanding and addressing barriers to LGBTQIA+ participation in bird ringing in the United Kingdom"
Had a fantastic time at #ASABWinter2024! I'm so inspired by the amazing work people are doing to address various biases in animal behaviour and am so grateful to have been able to present my first conference poster. But my favourite part is getting to see old friends and making so many new ones 😊
