On a gilt background in a red frame, beneath an incredibly stylised blue true with red fruit, a line of tiny brown piglet-like hedgehogs is gathering red round fruit on their spines. The hedgehogs are unusually long-legged and their spikes are rather thin and sparse. Image from Aberdeen University Library, Univ. Lib. MS 24 (Aberdeen Bestiary), folio 24r.

Although often shown very realistically, the medieval hedgehog was also shown in a more imaginative light as this image of what looks like spiky piglets from the Aberdeen Bestiary (c1200). #medievalmanuscripts #medievalbeasts #hedgehog #hedgehogs #aberdeenbestiary

"You’ll notice that these are not animals that your typical medieval European reader would have encountered."

A circular lozenge holding seven ducks (two blue, two white, two with green/grey necks and heads and brown bodies and one brown) waddling to the left with upraised heads, narrowed eyes and tilted shut beaks. Five ducks look fierce but two (the multi-coloured ones) look goofy. They are on a gilt background and the lozenge is in a multi-layered square frame with an inner gilt frame. Image from Aberdeen University Library, Univ. Lib. MS 24 (Aberdeen Bestiary), folio 59r.

Our medieval beast this week is found in both domestic and wild scenes. Ducks were thought to take off straight upwards so could escape from any sort of pit. These wild and domestic ducks are from the Aberdeen Bestiary (c1200). #medievalbeasts #medievalmanuscripts #ducks #duck #aberdeenbestiary

These are the industrious #AberdeenBestiary bees. They are going into hives known as skeps (from the Anglo Saxon, skeppa, for basket). These are made from woven straw or other plant fibre and require the beekeeper to have great skill to harvest the honey and not harm the bees.
