His distinctive voice and mask created an aura of invincibility around this character; boys were taught to be like Abu Obaida, men declared that they don’t trust anybody but Abu Obaida, and some female fans would regularly dream of being married to Abu Obaida, or someone just like him, veering into sexualized fantasies around Abu Obaida, “the stud.” His likability was greater than that of all Hamas’s political and military leaders combined, with many being brainwashed into Hamas’s propaganda thanks to the charismatic and compellingly confident manner in which Abu Obaida spoke. Major announcements and wartime updates in the current and previous conflicts between Hamas and Israel were always broadcast by this figure, and whatever he said would be analyzed for days by pseudo-experts on Al Jazeera and other pro-terror media throughout the Middle East.
