If universities want to use AI, one good task would be to automatically populate a university ethics application form from the original grant application. That would save a lot of time. Also considering that the forms are not written for historians. #AI #academichistory #universities

Die Universität als exklusiver Ort der »Persönlichkeitsbildung« in der Autobiografie des Historikers Karl Brandi (1868-1946)
Lena Oetzel

Abstract
The autobiography Aus 77 Jahren (From 77 Years) by the historian Karl Brandi
(1868-1946) offers an insight into the power structures and exclusion mechanisms of the German academic system in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As a central figure in German historical scholarship, Brandi describes his academic career, idealizing the phase of precarity as formative for personality development and thus cementing elitist hierarchies. In his depiction of academic life as a family community, he reinforces male-dominated structures that still have an impact today. The autobiography reveals the mechanisms of a system that idealizes precariousness as a necessary test while reproducing unequal access opportunities. Brandi’s influence on the institutionalization of these thought patterns illustrates how deeply anchored hierarchical ideas are in the academic culture.

Keywords: Autobiography, Academic Personae, Academic Precarity, German Academic Study of History, University
