#teaching and #patientcare are punishments and inconveniences. You heard it here first.
(Those two are literally the only parts of the job in #academicmedicine that I enjoy)

Whatever my future in academic medicine, it has been my mission in #FacultySenate to change this, and making small inroads

My entire disillusionment with #academicmedicine. What are we even doing here:

“pitfalls can sink careers of promising academics…say “no” to projects that will not advance promotion and tenure…the most common problem I see with junior faculty. They love to teach, they love to take care of patients”

I got a request from someone I did not know to write a letter of recommendation for promotion for another person I did not know. I was really surprised, but apparently this is not unheard of in academia? #academicmedicine #medsky

When the best #clinicians at your #hospital have zero ability to move up the chain, there is something really wrong with your incentive structure. Unlike this very venerable #physician, I highly doubt the equivalent talented clinicians will dedicate 33+ years to #academicmedicine - they'll leave

2 0 0 0

I also agree with this article that #academicmedicine is a caste system and the #clinical track are lower caste even though that track does 90%+ of the #patientcare. It's especially exasperating when you see wait times stretching to 6 months to 1 year for certain specialties

They shouldn’t, but they will because I have never seen greater collective cowardice than in #academicmedicine

I’m feeling increasingly pessimistic about #academia and feel ready to leave #academicmedicine because I have not seen one single university with an attached #hospital that has met the moment. Not a single one.

(I know nothing about this guy, but the lack of transparency here is appalling)

A potential new approach for treating Rett syndrome This work lays the foundation and provides preclinical evidence for a therapeutic approach for Rett syndrome that increases MeCP2 and confers functional improvement.

Rett syndrome affects 1 in 10,000 girls and has no cure. But new #research from @bcmhouston.bsky.social and Texas Children's is changing that. This is the kind of foundational science that happens across #academicmedicine.

Truly humiliating and another nail in coffin of #academicmedicine.

“The Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) removed language from its standards that urged medical schools to teach health inequities…how factors such as housing, food access and transportation, can shape a patient’s health”

Basically anything from Division Chair to Department Chair to any level of Dean requires tenure, but it seems like a lot of other places are already seeing the writing on the wall and are adapting to a post- #tenure world in #academicmedicine to survive.
We won’t make it unless we change.

I had an interesting conversation with one of my co- #healthpolicy fellows who is in #academicmedicine. Said at their institution can become an Associate Dean from the #clinical track, and was shocked when I said #tenure is required for any leadership roles at my #hospital. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I get it, #academicmedicine feels like a scam sometimes. my dudes, I may be writing a bill next week to prevent CMS enrolling #olderadults in #MedicareAdvantage without their consent and be forced into #priorauth
This affects clinical practice far more than Journal of 5 people read in last 20 years

#academicmedicine everywhere is the most reactionary institution in this country, and private practices have been taken over by #privateequity and make you treat #patientcare like an assembly line factory, and I don’t want to completely stop seeing patients

Help.

Oh boy. I thought Gilliam was good, but the one thing I have learned about #academia the last couple of years is it never fails to disappoint me.

I have become so jaded 🤦🏻‍♀️ like more than COVID level cynical about #academicmedicine
