no easy answers here, but something I think a lot about as the only #clinical track representative on #FacultySenate leadership. #Tenure was meant to protect #academicfreedom, allow you to #teach or do #research on your passions. But if you aren't teaching, doing research, or seeing patients...?

Great! I actually enjoy coming to central campus, and am there tomorrow anyway for #FacultySenate. I’ll come to Hatcher tomorrow, will be a trip down memory lane, I spent a lot of time in the little cubbyhole rooms in the stacks in college

if you are #clinical track, you don't need to be promoted to keep your job, you can stay assistant professor your whole career if you don't have any interest in grants/papers.
But in my OTHER role in #FacultySenate I've been a squeaky wheel to create other avenues for advancement for people like me

I never knew the extent of it until I was elected to #FacultySenate. It is literally pervasive.

I'll be honest, when I was an undergrad I had a crush on one of my Political Science GSIs (graduate student instructors) - nothing happened, but it's so easy to take advantage of impressionable 18 yos

Wait…what? We had an extensive search process for our Presidents (that has always included #undergraduate and #graduate #student elected leadership (though not #FacultySenate, discussion for another day)

I assume he has less baggage than Carter but there was zero democratic input. Truly WTF

My life right now: step off the plane, get into my car (rare time I parked at the #airport), go straight to campus for a #FacultySenate meeting. Work clinically most of next 5 days. Come right back to airport in 6 days for my next trip.
I admit, I’m over the traveling part. Could use teleportation

I’m up at 6 AM to round on #longcall #inpatient #resident teams. I have a #FacultySenate commitment in the afternoon but f**k it, the President of the University is seeing me in #scrubs today 😂

I'm in the #MichiganLeague between my #FacultySenate meeting and the Chicago Symphony orchestra, and there's a girl in the cafe singing #TaylorSwift songs while students are studying for #midterms (singing quite well, granted, though it's not my type of music lol)

As #FacultySenate #ViceChair I’m co-hosting a #clinical faculty talk at 7 AM Friday (time was my idea)
Central campus faculty: “lmao wtf are you serious”
#Medical faculty: “appreciate your efforts to accommodate us, surgeons and anesthesiologists will already be in OR, 5 AM would be better”
🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't think I'll ever be promoted, because #academia cares about literally nothing I'm dedicating 90% of my time to ( #healthpolicy and #FacultySenate/ protecting #highereducation and #academia from an administration destroying it)
...but I fully support #socialmedia on #promotion packets

I don't know if #OhioState allows #clinical faculty on their #FacultySenate, but when you have that voice, you can sit in the same room as the Regents/Trustees and tell them on the front lines how much your #hospital reputation is being torpedo'ed kamikaze style.
Demand better. For your patients.

This gets to an inherent problem in #academicmedicine which I am attempting to fix by being the first ever #clinical #medical faculty ever elected to the #FacultySenate at #Michigan.
You can't live in a bubble pretending the university leadership doesn't affect you as a #healthcare provider

Updating my calendar for this month, my current distribution of labor in 2026:
60% #House #legislative staffer
30% #FacultySenate elected representative
10% #clinical #medicine
My paycheck:
60ish% clinical medicine
10ish% Faculty Senate
0% Congressional staffer (except travel reimbursement) 🤣

Big news! The Department of Medicine’s own Robert Bonomo, MD, has been elected to the CWRU School of Medicine Faculty Senate!

As a representative for the School of Medicine, Dr. Bonomo will play a vital role in shaping the future of academic excellence!

That's great! Yeah, we have an active @aaup.org chapter (a former AAUP President is on SACUA now, but yeah, I have learned the hard way that #sharedgovernance is...not a thing here. UM has one of weakest #FacultySenate in the country 😬 (better with current interim Prez, we'll see who comes next)

Not right now. While I haven't loved high level decisions made at my institution, both within and outside the #medical campus, I have a VERY supportive #Geriatrics division at my multiple ways of "going rogue" lol ( #FacultySenate, #healthpolicy), and yeah, can work half time with great benefits

I'm aware, but I agree with overall premise and recommendations in second half. only reason I am in #FacultySenate leadership is because the fairy godmother that are #tenured faculty granted us Cinderellas ( #clinicaltrack) voting privileges in 2023. 206 years after #tenure/ #research tracks

Yeah we managed to replace the Provost with a woman (whom we in #FacultySenate have a good working relationship with), I would LOVE if the next university president is a woman. The last one we had (Mary Sue Coleman) one of best in decades
Maybe we need a woman #football coach too 🤦🏻‍♀️

That's great! but yeah, I think our #union efforts need to come from the #Faculty level, I actually went on a Field trip to the #Flint campus in late October with the Chair and another #FacultySenate member and we learned about how they got their contract.

unfortunately we don't have a #union for any of our #tenure, #research, or #clinical track faculty (in #AnnArbor - Flint does!), but if union were to form, it absolutely would encompass #medical faculty as well
#Clinical track added to #FacultySenate 2023, I'm first leader, and it's going swimmingly

Had a really great session of #FacultySenate with #clinical #medicine #faculty, and it wasn't lost on me that 67% of us who showed up were Indian women. Along with Black women, doing difficult work of #governance, but nobody wants to actually put us in leadership (though I somehow got elected lol)

I want to put a plug here - there are 8 #medicine representatives on #SenateAssembly rotating off in April 2026.
We currently have 1 #Pediatrician (and one #OBGYN researcher) out of 19 #medicine #faculty in #FacultySenate
We desperately need your voices in #academicmedicine #governance.
Please run!

The Stanford Undergraduate and the Mentor (Published 2015)

I didn’t know about this, but I’ve never seen university handle #sexualharassment worse than #Stanford, something I’m keenly aware of in #FacultySenate. Thomas Stamey and Seymour Levine (now both dead) from #medicine too
Even if women are legal adults, with #power differential, this isn’t consensual

Been busy today with #policy fellowship and #FacultySenate work, haven't had chance to parse the #FellowshipMatch data, but note this:
10 percentage point decrease in #InfectiousDisease matches and an abysmal 37% #Geriatrics match rate
I blame this entirely on US anti- #immigrant #policies

Whenever I get frustrated about issues in #medicine, I'm reminded that I can never leave #AnnArbor because the rest of faculty on campus are so god-darn awesome and innovative.
If it wasn't for #FacultySenate, #RoadScholar and other opportunities to liaise with other schools, I'd be gone already

Ope I guess my University of #Michigan #FacultySenate position is in jeopardy now (I’m pretty sure more than 50% of us on SACUA are foreign born)

3 0 1 0

I think this is basically an extension of my #FacultySenate role, but also an indication that the current President values my opinion, which I cannot say for the previous one lol (hope that's the case for the next one too- unfortunately the current Interim wants to retire lol)

Faculty Senate Meeting | U-M Faculty Senate

Any #UMich #Faculty, please #vote on the #FacultySenate resolutions between now and Nov 6. I hope they all pass with Assad level margins (or Spanberger margins in Alexandria, Fairfax and Loudon counties tomorrow and Mamdani margins in Brooklyn)

That too as part of the #fiction, and compare that to #measles 😬 I had to explain R0 of 18 to my #historian #FacultySenate colleague and the horrified look on his face when I explained that (thankfully our undergrads are 97% #vaccinated for #MMR
