Drawing of toddler girl on beach kissing a giant Aldabra turtle
Toddler girl kissing a giant Aldabra turtle statue at the zoo. Inspiration photo for accompanying drawing in this post.
One more #creation for you this morning. Completed a few months ago but slacking on sharing. This sweet little #muse had me flying through this #drawing.

Nearly a month ago, our Aldabra team spotted 23 flamingos gathered at the pond, including several juveniles at Bassin Flamant. 😍🦩
Juvenile flamingos can be distinguished by their paler colouring, as they have not yet developed the bright pink pigmentation of adults.

They may be hard to spot, but bewtween July and August , you just might be lucky enough to witness them. Hammerhead sharks are significant creatures that grace Aldabra's waters and are often seen schooling together in a stunning underwater spectacle.💙

Excellent new paper by lead authors @apriljazb.bsky.social and Anna Koester at Seychelles Islands Foundation on #reef resilience benchmarks across the Indo-Pacific. Trophic-level biomass as a practical tool for managers. It really resonates after my time on #Aldabra.

I had a chance to talk to Karin Kloosterman of Green Prophet for a story she was writing on #Aldabra and #Assomption, in #Seychelles. Here's her story: www.greenprophet.com/2025/05/kevi...
On my way home from #Aldabra I spent a couple of days in Zurich, Switzerland, to hang out with @dennish.bsky.social. Sometimes, my indirect route through life can be explained by my friends.
#Aldabra report, the short version: Spent a month on Aldabra. It's an atoll. Immersive experience. Mind blown. 150,000 glorious giant tortoises. Ecosystem engineers. Tortoise turf. See a BABY TORTOISE… and read more on my blog.

Textures of #Aldabra — Fallen red mangrove leaf (Rhizophora mucronata) at dawn along the western channel.
Textures of #Aldabra — eroded champignon limestone along the beach.
Textures of #Aldabra — champignon limestone can take the sole off your shoe, or really wreck any part of your body that touches it.
A black and two white egrets on the beach of Aldabra atoll.
#Avifauna of #Aldabra: The fascinating dimorphic egret (Egretta dimorpha) stalking the beach at dawn. Don't be fooled by the dramatic color difference — both the white and the black black colorforms belong to the same species.
The Islets of #Aldabra: When the tide is high in the lagoon, the little islands look fairly standard-issue. During low tide they look like mushrooms. On this day I joined a white-tailed tropicbird (Phaethon lepturus) nest monitoring project.
What's spidey on #Aldabra? A redleg orbweaver (Trichonephila inaurata) built a face-grabbing web over the stairs at the accommodation block. Lovely red bands on its legs, as the name suggests. I feel lke in another life we could have been friends.
What's on the wing on #Aldabra? Sacred ibis (Threskiornis bernieri), feasting on green turtle eggs exposed by the waves on Settlement Beach. Many eggs were rotten, and others had already hatched. Crabs joined the party. A lot of sand is moving away from the beach now. Rocky shoreline exposed.
What's crabby in #Aldabra? Cardisoma carnifex, pausing to savor the sunset over the reef.
What's crabby in #Aldabra? A purple-blue coconut crabs (Birgus latro) raids the storm-exposed nest of a green turtle. These crabs normally move away when they see humans. But this one would not budge from the egg horde.
What's crabby in #Aldabra? An orange coconut crabs (Birgus latro) stalks the beach in the late afternoon.
What's crabby in #Aldabra? A pair of coconut crabs (Birgus latro) — largest terrestrial crab species — dismantling a coconut. Colors range from purplish-blue to orangey. Most of the crabs here are on the orange end of the spectrum.
