“No man ever got very high by pulling other people down. The intelligent merchant does not knock his competitors. The sensible worker does not work those who work with him. Don't knock your friends. Don't knock your enemies. Don't knock yourself.” ― Alfred Lord Tennyson

In The Snowdrop, Tennyson welcomes the earliest flower of the year, small, brave, and prophetic, a reminder that even in the coldest months, renewal has already begun.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light: The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes But ring the fuller minstrel in. Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Ring Out, Wild Bells (from In Memoriam) by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
She sleeps: on either hand upswell
The gold-fringed pillow lightly prest:
She sleeps, nor dreams, but ever dwells
A perfect form in perfect rest.

Free hearts, free foreheads—you and I are old;
Old age hath yet his honor and his toil.
Death closes all; but something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done,
Not unbecoming men that strove with gods.

The Princess; liker to the inhabitant
Of some clear planet close upon the Sun,

A book cover where the title of the text is in a gold frame surrounded by light pink flowers and green vines. The text reads "Tennyson, The Princess, pictures by Howard Chandler Christy".
The title page of the book. The text is surrounded by an oval wreath of pink flowers with the blooms at the top and the stems crossing at the bottom. There are some small red berries on the stems. The text reads: "The Princess by Alfred Lord Tennyson with drawings by Howard Chandler Christy". At the bottom above where the stems cross, the text reads "The Bobbs-Merrill Company Publishers".
I love the gorgeous artwork in this edition of "The Princess" by #AlfredLordTennyson. Feels very #ArtNouveau! 🌸

In Memoriam
"Tis midnight o’er the dim mere’s lonely bosom,
Dark, dusky, windy midnight: swift are driven
The swelling vapours onward: every blossom
Bathes its bright petals in the tears of heaven."

William Cullen Bryant was a poet from the American mid-19th century, a heavy in his day until he wound up inside a book that I illustrated years ago: Poets Ranked By Beard Weight. That took the wind out of his very nicely crosshatched sails, if I may say so myself.
Alfred Lord Tennyson, another poetic heavy, plus a pal of Lewis Carroll, sort of. The inking on this wallah is superkool, as we used to say back in the day.
Dante Gabriel Rossetti, another loony English poet who thought that Carroll's Snark was an attack upon himself. He was also into wombats. His hypnotic gaze could stun them in an instant, he was that good. The inking's pretty good also.
I draw great beards though, oddly enough, I have none! This has always baffled the critics until Poets Ranked by Beard Weight silenced their yapping. The book is that good.

Thou who stealest fire,
From the fountains of the past,
To glorify the present, oh, haste,
Visit my low desire!
Strengthen me, enlighten me!
I faint in this obscurity,
Thou dewy dawn of memory.

How dull it is to pause, to make an end,
To rust unburnish'd, not to shine in use!
As tho' to breathe were life! Life piled on life
Were all too little, and of one to me
