Born in California in 1931, Duvall made his film debut as Boo Radley n the iconic 'To Kill a MockIngbird' (1962) starring Gregory Peck. A decade later, he starred as the iconic consigliere lawyer Tom Hagen in Francis Ford Coppolla's 'The Godfather' (1972), a role he returned to its sequel in 1974, but not for the trilogy in 1990. In 1973, he starred in 'The Outfit' followed in 1974, in Coppola's 'The Conversation' opposite Gene Hackman, and then 1976's 'Network'. He then was Oscar-nominated in Coppola's iconic 'Apocalypse Now' (1979), opposite Martin Sheen and Marlon Brando, stating the infamous line, "I love the smell of napalm in the morning". The 1980s started opposite Robert De Niro in 'True Confessions' (1981), followed by 'Tender Mercies' (1983) fot which he won his Oscar, starred with Robert Redford in 'The Natural' (1984) and opposite Sean Penn in 'Colors' (1988). In the 1990s, Duvall starred with Tom Cruise in 'Days of Thunder' (1990), 'Rambling Rose' (1991) with Laura Dern, 'Falling Down' with Michael Douglas, Ron Howard's 'The Paper' (1994) with Michael Keaton, 'Sling Blade' (1996) with Billy Bob Thornton, and then in 1997, he starred and directed 'The Apostle' for which he was Oscar-nominated, followed by another Oscar-nominated turn in 1998 with 'A Class Action' opposite John Travolta, as well as starring in 'Deep Impact'. In the 2000s, he starred in 'Gone in 60 Seconds' (2000) with Nicolas Cage and Angelina Jolie, in Kevin Costner's 'Open Range' (2003), with Tom Cruise in 'Jack Reacher' (2012) and got hia final Oscar nomination opposite Robert Downey Jr. in 'The Judge' (2014).
