Messy notes, scattered thoughts? Good. They mean the ideas are alive. Try pulling out a single sentence from your research and letting it spark a paragraph. You’re shaping, not sorting.

Stuck? Switch the medium. Handwrite one messy paragraph, dictate a few thoughts into your phone, or jot bullet points. Different tools wake up different parts of your brain.

The Weight of a Handbag, the Pace of a Life Daily writing prompt What is the most important thing to carry with you all the time? View all responses It’s become a tradition for my husband to buy me an “expensive” handbag each Christmas. I can never bring myself to spend over $200 on the cute ones I see. It’s the Julius in me — I just can’t plunk down the cash.

The world moves fast—too fast sometimes. My latest post reflects on what we carry, what we cling to, and what we lose along the way, ending with W.H. Davies’ timeless Leisure. Slow down with me. #WritingCommunity #Poetry #AmWriting #WritersLife #PoetsOfBluesky #BlogPost #AmWritingNonfiction

Hello, writer lovelies! It's been so long since I've done an author bio, and I was inspired by a cute one today. Mine didn't come out as cute 😂 #writingcommunity #amwriting #amwritingnonfiction #amwritingmemoir #amwritingessays

🎉It’s celebration time!🎉

My first draft manuscript is completed. Not including an intro, conclusion, or other misc chapters, we are sitting at 25k words.

The road is still long, but wow. This feels great.

a baby is screaming in a crowd of people while sitting in a stadium . Alt: a baby is screaming in a crowd of people while sitting in a stadium .

Finished my brain dump.

I’m excited to say - minus the intro/conclusion - I am one section away from completing my first draft manuscript.

That’s about 700-1,200 words left.

Tomorrow, we slay the game.

Just finished ‘The War of Art’ by Steven Pressfield for the second time.

Truly a book that should be read by creatives everywhere, and meant for any part of the journey.

This will be a must-read annually to ground myself.

Just finished ‘On Writing Well’ by William Zinsser.

This will be one I will re-read over and over again. Whether it be reference or to just revisit a great work of art.

If you are a nonfiction writer - this is a must.

Q: How much time and attention did you spend on these scripts?
Another "Simpsons" writer once compared your scripts to finely tuned machines-if the wrong person mucked with them, the whole thing could blow up.

John Swartzwelder: All of my time and all of my attention.

It's the only way I know how to write, darn it. But I do have a trick that makes things easier for me. Since writing is very hard and rewriting is comparatively easy and rather fun, l always write my scripts all the way through as fast as I can, the first day, if possible, putting in crap jokes and pattern dialogue-"Homer, I don't want you to do that." "Then I won't do it." Then the next day, when I get up, the script's been written. It's lousy, but it's a script. The hard part is done.

lousy, but it's a script. The hard part is done. It's like a crappy little elf has snuck into my office and badly done all my work for me, and then left with a tip of his crappy hat. All I have to do from that point on is fix it. So l've taken a very hard job, writing, and turned it into an easy one, rewriting, overnight. I advise all writers to do their scripts and other writing this way. And be sure to send me a small royalty every time you do it.

Writing time, but I can’t return to my novel yet; I’ve got an article due soon—2,000 on collaboration in comics.

Just completed the rubbish first draft (what my friend likes to call the “crappy elf draft” after this John Swartwelder quote:)

I hinted this - I'm confirming it now.

I am writing a book.

I am excited, terrified, and curious as to how this will go.

What I promised in my first post on #bluesky is that I would be transparent. So here's my reader statement: (1/2)

Have you ever picked up a library book and couldn’t put it down, then had to buy it because it was that impactful?

“Write a Must-Read” by AJ Harper is that book for me right now. Truly transformative whether you write or not.

As a first-time writer, it’s hard to put pen to paper sometimes.

I’m having great luck kickstarting my brainstorming by walking and talking it out with the Voicepal app.

What are some other best practices/tools out there?

This is honestly what I needed today. I’m at a place where #creativity and #ideation is overwhelming, and imposter syndrome is on the attack.

Although difficult, this has been a #productive morning for my book outline.

Sharing more soon!

Committing to a productive week. Plan for the week:

📋 Commit to a rough outline for my book.
🕰️ Timebox my dedicated writing time on the calendar.
🤝 Establish “peer pressure” #accountability.
👨‍💻 Hit 5,000 words by Sunday.

Let’s go.

Authorship has been on my mind for years. Recently I’ve dove back into learning more about writing structure, process, and best practices.

Here are some books that I have enjoyed and find super helpful (Thread 1/7):

Pretty confident I’m committing to writing a book. 📚

A daunting task, indeed. 🥵

I can share experiences or knowledge (that people already ask me about) and it helps someone, maybe more people need to hear my perspective.

Round table covered with printed manuscript pages, colored pens, and a pair of glasses situated near a window. Looks as if a writer could be at work or she could be stalling by positioning these things to take a photo to post on social media. In this day and age "working" has many connotations.
