With more than two-dozen plays, including Peer Gynt, An Enemy of the People, Hedda Gabler, and A Doll’s House, he is called “the father of modern drama.” He is believed to be the most frequently performed dramatist in the world after William Shakespeare.
Like Harriet Beecher Stowe, Emile Zola, and Upton Sinclair, Ibsen can also be described as a protest writer, pointing out injustices. A Doll’s House may be the best example of this. In the 19th Century, Norwegian women, like the play’s main character, Nora, are oppressed by stultifying patriarchal rules. When Nora sees that her father and her husband treat her like a doll, an object, she stops being submissive. Instead, she pieces together a new identity and understands her need for autonomy. The play ends with Nora walking out of her home and shutting the door. That one piece of stage direction said what so many women were forbidden to say – for centuries.

A Doll’s House hit Norwegian audiences like a bomb. Many women saw themselves in Nora and began demanding an end to the country’s patriarchal laws. Lots of men were furious to be portrayed as egotistical misogynist taskmasters. Reporters and social scientists who study this sort of thing have noted that many heterosexual couples who see current productions of the play have similar, gender-based reactions to those during Ibsen’s lifetime.

For his 70th birthday, the Norwegian Women's Rights League organized a banquet in Ibsen’s honor. At the event, the playwright said, “I thank you for the toast, but must disclaim the honor of having consciously worked for the women's rights movement... True enough, it is desirable to solve the woman problem, along with all the others; but that has not been the whole purpose. My task has been the description of humanity.”

“I don't imagine you will dispute the fact that at present the stupid people are in an absolutely overwhelming majority all the world over.”

“DR. STOCKMANN: [..] See to all the barricades—the truth is coming! Ring the bells, sound the alarm! The truth, the truth is out, and soon it will be prowling like a lion in the streets!”

DR. STOCKMANN: You’re trying to build a town on a morality so rotten that it will infect the country and the world! If the only way you can prosper is this murder of freedom and truth, then I say with all my heart, “Let it be destroyed! Let the people perish!”

“DR. STOCKMANN: Right to my face! The trouble with me was I kept giving them credit for being our kind of people, but they’re dictators! They’re people who’ll try to hold power even if they have to poison the town to do it.”

“DR. STOCKMANN: Peter, don’t you think it’s a citizen’s duty to share a new idea with the public?

PETER STOCKMANN: The public doesn’t need new ideas—the public is much better off with old ideas.

DR. STOCKMANN: You’re not even embarrassed to say that?”

“Captain Horster is one of the longest silent roles in dramatic literature, but he is not to be thought of as characterless therefor. It is not a bad thing to have a courageous, quiet man for a friend, even if it has gone out of fashion.”

Two tickets to a stage play held up in the air by Faeryn's hand; in the background is the stage setting for the play and the auditorium crowd.

Caught a lovely production of #anenemyofthepeople at #actcontemporarytheater in Seattle today! We were gifted free tickets and I am so grateful. It was PHENOMENAL; the cast did such an amazing job. I had a wonderful time!

An Enemy of the People Jeremy Strong is AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE - a new version by AMY HERZOG, directed by SAM GOLD. Limited engagement - Broadway Spring 2024

I was lucky enough to see David Patrick Kelly in a production of Ibsen's #AnEnemyOfThePeople, playing the main character's father-in-law. He was hilarious, and his voice was immediately recognizable.

#ZacharyHart is a force of nature and he steals the show again, as he did in #AnEnemyOfThePeople (also adapted and directed by Ostermeier, last year). He holds the audience in the palm of his hand, every time. ❤️🎭

Review: ‘Enemy of the People’ pulls no punches at San Jose Stage San Jose Stage’s production of Ibsen’s classic leaves no doubt about who it’s referring to and what is at stake.

In one of the bolder pieces of theater San Jose Stage has produced in recent years, Ibsen's #AnEnemyofthePeople carries a refreshed relevance (sadly) that serves as a call to arms to continue fighting for truth. My review for the @mercurynews.com #hellatheatre www.mercurynews.com/2025/02/13/r...
