3/5 However, #AnimBehav2023 saw a drop in tweets and a decrease in reach compared to #AnimBehav2021

Despite fewer interactions, the impact of presenting on Twitter allowed for much more engagement than seen at some in-person conferences #AcademicTwitter

2/5 As with #AnimBehav2021 we found that accessibility was a major win for Twitter conferences.

In 2023, we increased representation within international communities. But engagement dropped in US and UK time zones. #InclusiveScience

A big thank you to staff @ACGuanacaste, and to all the students & field assistants that collected recordings of wrens over the past 17 years! Also, shout out to @LSzucki for the awesome wren drawings. Thank you @NSERC_CRSNG for funding & thank you organizers of #AnimBehav2021! πŸ‘

6/6 Our research highlights the importance of investigating behavioural questions in ♀️ & ♂️ separately!

We recommend future research look further into why female wrens switch song types more often than males.

Thanks for checking out my #AnimBehav2021 thread! 😊

4/6 We did not find an effect of # of neighbours on males but females switched song types more often with more neighbours

Song-type switching is an aggressive signal in some species. Are ♀️ wrens using song-type switching to defend against more neighbours? πŸ€”

3/6 We asked "How does the # of neighbours that wrens defend their territory against affect their singing & duetting behaviour?"

We also looked at the effect of time of day & year. We used 17 years of wren recordings from Santa Rosa to answer these questions #AnimBehav2021

1/6 To begin my #AnimBehav2021 thread, I'd like to introduce you to...the Rufous-and-white Wren 🀩

This tropical species lives in the fragmented #TropicalDryForests of @ACGuanacaste #CostaRica, an imperiled ecosystem that experiences extreme dry & wet seasons.

6/6 This spp w facultative paternal care makes prenatal & postnatal hormone adjustments. Prenatally ⬆ estradiol could prep them for paternal care once infants arrive (or reflect wt gain), but isn't associated w acute behavioral changes like androgens are. TYπŸ™!

β˜‘οΈ Expectant male estradiol ⬆️4x ~10 days before their infants' birth! Here are 4 males' profiles. This could prep them for fatherhood.
❌ Estradiol unrelated to huddle, carry, play, groom, hold, & composite score (Total Care). No support for short-term role.

3/6 We studied lemurs in Ranomafana Natl Park, Madagascar rainforest for 2 yrs @CentreValBio. We collected ~2700h behavioral data & fecal samples for hormone analysis. We have data during fetal & infant development. Samples analyzed @LEEPUArizona. The team was BIG

2/6 Estradiol ⬆️ maternal sensitivity. In a few spp with obligate paternal care (incl. us) it ⬆️ in expectant males. Does it also ⬆️ in facultative spp with loads of variation BEFORE infants are born? Is it associated w infant care behavior AFTER infants are born?

1/6 Are hormones involved in facultative paternal care?
Monogamous red-bellied #lemurs live in prs. Dads are in contact w infants as much as men in US & some months more than moms. But there's LOTS of variation! Dads provide 0-37% of all care across development.

Video S2: Crack Mouth Side (CMS) Vervet Monkey Peanut Processing Technique Supplemental Video 2 to "Processing of novel food reveal payoff and rank-biased social learning in a wild primate" by Canteloup, Biff Cera, Barrett and van de Waal, 2019. Here the "crack mouth side" technique is displayed. https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.09.25.313437v1

3.Monkeys used 3 different processing techniques: opening the peanut with the hand (ch), with the mouth from the side of the peanut (cms) or with the mouth from the top of the peanut (cmt). #AnimBehav2021

does a novel feeding habit spread in wild monkeys? We combined a field experiment with Bayesian dynamic learning models and showed that monkeys used the highest payoff processing technique and displayed by higher ranked demonstrators. #AnimBehav2021

The upcoming conference #AnimBehav2021 seems like the perfect opportunity to return to twitter after some busy busy #PhD time. Very curious and excited about it! πŸ₯³

Maybe a specific colleague will join for some background discussion 😎 *cough* @pratikunterwegs
