What is time management? Usually when we think about time management, we think about "efficiency" and "productivity". In capitalist thinking, time is a limited resource. We want to use our resources to make numbers get bigger. Time is how we live. Time management is about how we choose to live our lives. It's about being in control when we make that choice. How do you want to spend your time?

Time is how we live. It's a lot of funny, incomprehensible things.

The one thing time isn't is a means to an end.

Do make it enjoyable! We are more likely to do things we enjoy. This is not a bad thing. It's actually a really great thing because now we know how to do the things that are hard for us - make it more enjoyable. Are all time management tasks the Worst Things Ever? How can you make them more enjoyable? Maybe it IS the pretty notebook. Maybe it's something else entirely. Do what YOU enjoy.

Fun fact! We're allowed to like the things we do! In fact, the more we like them, the more likely we're going to do them!

Suffering doesn't make something "healthier" or "better for us", all it does is make it harder.

Taking control of our time won't solve capitalism, but it will make us less easy to control. It doesn't matter how you actually manage your time, it matters that you are the one making the choices. Use a system that you understand. Avoid anything owned by Big Tech Try not to spend more than $10 on your tools Only automate something once you have done it manually at least once

These are just a few of the ways to start taking control of your time. I'm a huge fan of starting simple - do what's feasible and move from there. The most important thing is that YOU are making the choice.

Most of these schmancy time management systems come from corporations trying to make shit tons of money out of people trying to control their time. Capitalism relies on these people in power being able to control other people's time - when to show up, when to work, what to do when, when to take breaks, deadlines... These days, most time management tools are coming from people who have a vested interest in keeping people from being able to control their own time. The automation or the app might make things easier in the short run, but it means we aren't in control.

Corporate-controlled time management tools serve corporate capitalist agendas - not just making money off of your need for the tool, but taking over YOUR control of YOUR time.

I swear that every other app these days is a "time management tool". When it's not an app, it's a schmancy journal, or some new software for office work, or some other new system build for efficiency. There's also a huge push to automate everything. I'm not a fan. Time management is about being in control of your own time. If an app, automation, or over-hyped journal is in control of your time, that's not time management, it's loss of your independence.

Happy 2026! In the rush towards New Years Resolution, Time Management is a thing that comes up a lot. So, let's talk about it!
