Francesca Albanese has been the UN Human Rights Council's special rapporteur for occupied Palestinian territories since 2022. In every medium, she leads the accusation that Israel has been committing genocide in the Gaza Strip since Hamas's 7 October 2023 massacre. And on 2 April, in Antwerp's Queen Elisabeth Concert Hall, Albanese will receive an honorary doctorate from not one, but three Flemish institutions in Belgium: the University of Antwerp, the University of Ghent, and the Free University of Brussels. The universities say they wish to honour Albanese's "outstanding commitment to human rights and international justice."
It is the first time that universities have jointly conferred such an honour, and this curious event will overshadow simultaneous awards by the University of Antwerp to a pulmonologist, a toxicologist, and a scientist of learning. But the illusion of unanimous acclaim has been punctured already. The Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium's highest ranked university, rejected an invitation to join the others.
"The stance of KU Leuven at this moment is sickening," wrote a professor emeritus at the university's faculty of law and criminology in response. "It is a direct mockery of the calls from the International Court of Justice to do everything possible to end the genocide in Gaza. It makes KU Leuven complicit in this mass murder." Not only did Leuven not wish to honour Albanese; it had also awarded research grants to Israeli scholars engaged in academic work.

Jewish groups in Belgium have registered their dismay about the decision to honour Albanese.
Twelve years ago, she made antisemitic statements about the subjugation of the US and Europe governments by Jewish lobbies and Holocaust guilt.
At an Al Jazeera-sponsored event in Doha in February, she declared that "we as humanity have a common enemy." She subsequently insisted that she had been talking about a global "system" of oppression rather than about Israel as such. But the stampede by Albanese's allies in the UN and NGO complex to impugn the motives of European ministers and Jewish groups calling for her dismissal only shows how poisonous her discourse is.
The Doha flap provided cover-sort of-for the Flemish university rectors who personally nominated Albanese for the award. A statement issued in late February began:
Let us state clearly, first and foremost, that this honorary doctorate is not directed against the Jewish community, nor against any Jewish organisation or institution. It is an honorary doctorate awarded to a United Nations Special Rapporteur who, despite considerable personal pressure, continues to carry out her mandate.

I was curious: How would they respond to the mass murder and rape perpetrated by terrorists on October 7?
What I found wasn't just embarrassed silence, but genuine scenes of joy, expressed shamelessly to their tens of thousands of followers. "Finally, the colonized rebel against the colonizer!" "Finally, the oppressed fight back against the oppressor!" One of the leading figures of
"ecofeminism" and the French decolonial and indigenous movements, Fatima Ouassak-held up as a model of intersectional feminism-posted this on her X account that very day: "During the anti-colonial war in Algeria, Simone de Beauvoir and Sartre took a stand (without hesitation) for the Algerian armed resistance, against France. In the war between colonizers and the colonized, we must support (without hesitation) the side of the colonized. #FreePalestine."
All of a sudden, I realized that my book, published only three weeks earlier, had missed the elephant in the room.
A political and activist left that had spent years aspiring to a "convergence of struggles" was finally uniting. That convergence rested on a common enemy. A figure whose mutual hatred binds them together. That figure was the Jew—or rather, the "Zionist."
I watched this shared hatred of the Jew bring together Islamist preachers, supporters of the Islamic Republic of Iran, feminist and LGBTQ+ militants, radical ecologists, and anti-police activists—all in the name of a fight
"against Zionism, the United States, the West, and imperialism."

The tension was palpable. I watched as female activists in tears waited, like the rest of the room, for "news from the front." I soon learned that everyone was holding their breath to find out whether Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader, was still alive or had been killed by the Israel Defense Forces. The evening's presenter asked us to observe a moment of silence to honor "all the victims and martyrs of the independent cause."
Then, one activist's monologue galvanized the room: "This is the very essence of resistance: You will kill 10 of our men for every one of yours we kill, but you will be the ones to tire first! You shoot down a leader and he falls as a martyr, and we will have 10 more candidates. Ten fighter martyrs will fall; a thousand more will rise. You can kill the head, but you will not sever the resistance from its soil. The Palestinians will resist to the end! And as long as the land of Palestine is occupied, the Palestinians will rise. With or without arms. With or without legs. With or without children. With or without parents. The land of Palestine belongs to those who fight for it—the Palestinians!"
The activists' position was clear: Empathy for Palestinian civilians is not enough. One must provide unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, which means supporting the way Palestinians have chosen to express it-and thus supporting Sinwar and Hamas. As privileged white people, the argument went, we had no right to judge how an oppressed people chooses to defend itself; we can only support them in their "legitimate" struggle for justice.

This fanaticism animated the movement. And as I swiftly learned, everything was subordinated to it-including long-standing progressive principles. During my year undercover, I participated in a series of feminist demonstrations. Over and over again, I watched as demonstrators banned and attacked feminist activists who wanted to speak out for Israeli women victimized by Hamas.
On March 8, 2024, Jewish women were pelted with broken glass and had to be evacuated for their safety from the International Women's Day march in Paris. A year later, on March 8, 2025, Samidoun and other groups, with the approval of feminist organizations, set up a human blockade in Paris to prevent Jewish feminists and Iranian women there to support them from joining the procession.
Social media and flyers issued a clear directive: Do not march with the "fascists and Zionists... and if they show up, let's get the entire demonstration to chant slogans to drive them away and organize a massive procession that will force them to leave through sheer numbers."
I was there undercover, helplessly witnessing this segregation. Originally, I tried to reason with the activists, attempting to explain to them that these women were not
"far right." "Yes, but it's the same thing-they're Zionists," I was told.
To avoid being discovered, I had to shout these slogans alongside my comrades: "Zionists, fascists, you are the terrorists!" "No Zionists in our marches!" Meanwhile, members of Samidoun waved posters in honor of Leila Khaled, a terrorist and member of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, who originally rose to prominence after two separate plane hijackings in 1969 and 1970—the second of which ended with her arrest.
Khaled had been elevated to the status of a muse in the movement.

The results were clear: A moral rot that has infected every level of French society, extending from the activist classes all the way up to our electoral system. Take, for example, France's far-left political party, La France Insoumise (LFI). Several representatives of LFI have refused to recognize Hamas as a terrorist organization, instead characterizing it as a
"Palestinian force" responsible for "war crimes." During the French municipal elections earlier this month, LFI made Palestine the centerpiece of its campaign, with several candidates pledging to "twin" their cities with Palestinian cities or refugee camps in order to "build solidarity with the Palestinian people, stand against genocide, and contribute to their freedom and independence."
Ninety-two percent of French Jews believe that LFI contributes to antisemitism in France. And yet, while the municipal elections indicated that LFI's support remains limited in France's major urban centers, it won several victories in French working-class suburban areas. And my time undercover demonstrates that the sentiments it advocates have seeped into the minds of thousands of young French activists.
Next April, France will hold its national presidential election. Much may change between then and now. But in the meantime, the rhetoric of the far left in my country is only becoming more radical, and antisemitism is only continuing to soar. In 2025, despite the Jewish community making up less than 1 percent of the French population, 1,320 antisemitic acts were recorded-more than three attacks per day. Nearly a third of those acts explicitly featured a reference to Palestine.
Palestine has become the rallying cry of the progressive left—in my country, and across the world. And the fanaticism of the movement has justified violence, rape apologia, and terrorist adulation-because, of course, "resistance is justified when people are occupied."

Since October 7, anti-Zionist politicians and political institutions have relied more than ever on a specific tactic to deflect accusations of anti-Semitism: putting liberal and leftist Jews front and center and using them, essentially, as human shields.
This puts the global Jewish community in a bind.
How do we call out this rank tokenism without allowing the debate to descend into an intra-Jewish fight that leaves the politicians unscathed but the Jews further fragmented?
The answer is to focus most of our ire on those responsible for pitting the Jews against each other. Obviously, Jews who allow themselves to be used in this manner are not without agency and therefore their actions can and should be criticized—just without losing sight of the way political systems historically take advantage of Jewish infighting.
Sometimes, the institutions that deserve to come under withering rhetorical fire aren't political in the classic sense. Take the media. A couple of months ago, I noticed something reading the stories about Israeli President Isaac Herzog's trip to Australia after the Bondi Beach Hanukkah
massacre.

We call out tokenism not because we are trying to pick fights with other Jews, but because by the time a society sees token Jews being used as human shields for national parties & institutions, it is well on its way to losing the war against #antisemitism entirely. www.commentary.org/seth-mandel/...

An Ireland-based Palestinian journalist who has contributed to outlets including The Guardian, Al Jazeera, Drop Site, Middle East Eye, The New Arab and The Electronic Intifada shared posts on his Instagram story encouraging violence against an Irish pro-Israel commentator, Druze Israeli politicians and Israelis generally.
Abubaker Abed had been based in Gaza and was evacuated during the war, ending up in Ireland. He began his career as a soccer reporter and commentator before shifting to focus on the war when it began in October 2023. Press TV, an Iran state-backed media outlet, named him "Journalist of the Year" last year.
According to screenshots of Abed's Instagram stories shared by others on X, he called for violence against Israelis and against Rachel Moiselle, a popular pro-Israel Irish commentator, in response to Israel's passage this week of a death penalty law for Palestinian terrorists. The screenshots are no longer active on Abed's account and could not be independently verified by Jewish Insider. Abed did not respond to a request for comment.
"We need a woman in Ireland to shut this sellout's mouth," Abed posted, sharing a screenshot of a post by Moiselle - despite Moiselle, in the post, expressing full-throated opposition to the death penalty law.

And, sharing a video of Israel's far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, celebrating the law's passage - an action that garnered criticism from many Israeli and pro-Israel observers - Abed called for Israelis to be hunted down and murdered globally.
"Wiping out Israel off the planet is not enough revenge. Israelis mustn't feel safe anymore," he said.
"Haunt them and go after them where they go. These terrorist parasites must be removed from our planet."
Moiselle said she fears for her safety after the post.
"I have purposefully never interacted with or commented on this Hamas-affiliated Palestinian journalist based in Dublin, as it is quite clear he is dangerous," Moiselle said on X. "I have now been subjected to a very explicit post by him inciting violence against me. It is very strange that I have received this due to a post I made unequivocally condemning Israel's death penalty bill."
She said that the post about her is a sign of "how toxic and dangerous the anti-Israel climate has become in this country" and of why she doesn't feel safe in Ireland and plans to move by the end of the year.
