Art With Elders lead artist Mark Campbell is a great mentor to Kuang and he consistently encourages her to attend art class. Art brings her joy and peace and makes her feel a sense of satisfaction and confidence.

Moving to the United States was a big life change for Kuang. She could not farm here so her first few jobs included working as a seamstress and a senior caregiver. Kuang was first introduced to art at the Laguna Honda Hospital. #ArtWithElders
Yuyan Kuang was born in China in 1955. She finished elementary school in China and immigrated to the United States when she was in her forties. She worked on a farm when she was young. As a child, Kuang liked to spend time at the river, playing on the sand and enjoying the day. #ArtWithElders

Roy Bozeman remembers two paintings in his home when he was growing up in Houston. The artist used natural media like sticks and leaves to compose incredibly realistic landscapes. After going to art school in Houston, Bozeman explored using unusual materials to make his art. #ArtWithElders

“A Study of Familiar Places” brings together works that expand the notion of travel and challenge the age limit imposed on discovery. The artists featured here embrace the curious traveler’s mentality in their studied approach to place and perspective.

Art with elders at San Francisco’s Openhouse. My teacher, Hugh Leeman, showed us how to do three separate panels. Each panel is a story. They use this in filmmaking to break down the movie and show each visual shot.
