The artwork depicts an interior scene focused on an individual engaged in a game of solitaire. The setting suggests a modest and personal environment, with the central figure—an older man—seated on the edge of a well-made bed that occupies a significant portion of the foreground. The room is bathed in a warm, red hue, evoking a feeling of coziness and intimate domesticity. A single lamp hanging from the ceiling casts a soft light that illuminates the man and the game of cards arranged neatly on a portable case or suitcase, which serves as a makeshift table for his solitary pastime.

On the left side of the artwork, one can observe a simple wooden chair and a corner of a bedside table, while the wall is adorned with an oval-framed portrait of a figure and a rectangular painting displaying an equestrian scene. To the right of the man, there is an end table holding a candlestick and an ashtray, indicating a time before electric light was ubiquitous. The presence of a suitcase labeled “E-Z Mills Inc. Sample Case” at the foot of the bed suggests that the man could be a traveling salesman, resting and entertaining himself alone in his rented room.

Rockwell’s astute attention to detail can also be seen in the intricate patterning of the carpet, the textured bedspread, and the wood grain in the furniture, which all contribute to the rich visual narrative. The solemn concentration of the man on his game reflects a moment of quiet introspection or perhaps a respite from a wearying routine. Despite the simplicity of the subject matter, Rockwell skillfully invokes a story surrounding the man’s life, his travels, and the solace he finds in a simple deck of cards.

A woman is lying on the floor (or is it a bed? hard to tell). She is pensively looking at playing cards laid out before her. There’s also a dog next to her. The lady is wearing a hat. The artwork is a bit abstract.

The scene captures an introspective moment: a naked woman, completely absorbed in a card game. Nudity in this context is neither provocative nor uncomfortable, but an honest and natural representation of human vulnerability. The woman's position, slightly inclined forward while collecting their letters, suggests a state of concentration and recollection, moving away from any interpretation of exhibitionism.

Vallotton, known for his sharp sense of detail, exalts this intimate moment through an extremely balanced and controlled composition. The predominant colors in the work - the warm tones of the woman's skin, the dark nuances of the furniture and the reddish notes of the elements of the environment - generate a contrast that captures the attention of the viewer and reinforces the drama of the scene. The texture of the letters, the carpet and the skin have been treated with almost tactile care, adding depth and realism to the work.

The space in which the scene takes place is equally revealing. The room, with its collected atmosphere, creates a feeling of protection and participation in a private ritual. The illusion of intimacy is accentuated by the absence of other characters and the emphasis on the lonely act of playing letters, a hobby that symbolizes both individual concentration and the passage of time in solitude.

The choice of colors by Vallotton is particularly significant. The tones off the background allow the main figure to stand out with serene, almost ethereal clarity. The play of light and shadow, techniques in which Vallotton always stood out, influences the perception of the female figure, giving him volume and three-dimensionality.

A woman is alone, seated before a narrow table on which she has led some cards, seemingly to relieve her boredom with a game of Solitaire (aka Patience). Everything in the young woman’s attitude underlines her extreme solitude. She is composed of two silhouettes that join together, like two sides of the same coin; the front view of the face, fully lit, is absorbed in daydream and waiting whereas the aspect in profile, in shadow, seems even more anxious. This feminine figure should not be interpreted solely by her gender. She also comprises an allegory of the artist himself who shares his own concerns with her traits. Moreover, some are talking about a “self-portrait”, an assumption highlighted by the painter’s two-color signature on the bottom left that echoes the duality of the woman.

La Patience by Georges Braque is considered to be his masterpiece for the World War II period. Painted in 1942, this work is the fruit of the long months of the artist’s voluntary isolation in his studio in Paris during the German Occupation. From it, as for the rest of the works produced during this period, emanates the sense of an oppressive interior, a suffocating atmosphere, an all-consuming anguish. No visible source of light exists. The composition, organized along vertical and zigzag lines, is extremely complex. Vivid colors accentuate the feeling of confusion and solitude.

A domestic scene featuring three main figures. A seated cardinal takes his time with his bout of solitaire while his housemaid, standing next to him, stares off into space, holding a saucer, waiting for her employer to finish his game. In the foreground, a dog resting on the floor conveys the third expression of patience, waiting for its master to give it its next meal or an affectionate pat on the head.
Jean-Georges Vibert was part of a group of European artists, mainly from Italy and France, that, in the mid-nineteenth century, began creating genre scenes such as this, using humor and wit to make satirical observations about the Catholic Church.
