I am grateful paper torn to small canvas is cheap enough to scribble and draft. I want to level up to narratives in my art, but I have to start where I am. The herb paintings are the dopamine hits along the way.

I have a long way to go, but it is getting easier
Sage in my backyard and a 1st go with single ply raw #xuan paper.
It comes in 54x27” sheets and tears to pennies a page small sheets.
I went in with color marker as I felt meh about the draft. It is unexpectedly forgiving of the addition.

A Sumi-e ink of a waterfall on thin washi paper. It is somewhat abstract.
Grinding the #sumi stick, I can feel the ki as if flows and builds. I feel like it should be flowing that onto the paper. I lose focus after the first strokes. The energy lingers.
Surely others get this too. It feels strange to try and put it in words.

I’m to knit my occidental roots with this ancient #sum-e tradition in a way that that feels whole. Inking from my home landscapes. I don’t know how to sign it. I need to figure out my red insignia chop.
The seashell worked well, while I wait for the stone I ordered.

Rugged peeks looming over trees. A bird flies into the distance. The in is done in sumi on tissue light washi paper.
I find that after I have been poking around with the brush, the sumi seems to thicken up in the brush a bit and it becomes more expressive and opinionated, which is kind of fun.

I cannot put words to the sensation of the ink as it transmits to the paper. #sumi-e on heavy #washi may be my personal ASMR. It may take a minute to work through this black phase. It is nice to just sit with the moment of having lots of curiosity and limited technical skill.

Every kind of paint follows its own rules. Watercolors go light to dark. Oils the other way, acrylics and gouache do either. Sumi-e with gansai is a wierdo. The colors are a bit waxy, and the sumi resists and glides a bit over the top.

Everything I am learning on the basic practice #washi rolls, I expect to relearn on the next type of paper I try. Which wouldn’t be so bad, but this is SO much cheaper than the lovely handmade washi papers that beckon to me.

I am moved by the Sumi to a larger format. This is 11x18 or so. Breathe in with the ink, out with the stroke. The heron may become a good friend in works to come. My focus did not make it to the end (this time -maybe next time)

Repurposing ‘failed’ drafts: Lessons learned:
1. Match the brush to the task. The larger brush was perfect for the mountain on 60gsm #washi.
2. wet sumi will bleed.

First #urbansketch -sketched on the bus (130lb multimedia paper) and painted later with #gansai
The good -super forgiving, nice glow in the paint. The flat brush is great for background after.
The bad, it is waxy and slow to absorb, no bleed or wet play.

The thing about #gansai on rice paper, is unlike #watercolor paper, Asian art papers are thirsty. The #gansaitambi that lifts on western paper is drunk up by eastern paper. You can see why the single stroke simplicity is king in the east. I am learning to substitute for practice.
