It’s not a sport anymore; it’s a seasonal collection where entertainment is prized over engineering prowess. Has it finally become WWF1? The Bahrain ‘Runway’, aka testing, is officially over, the crates are being packed, and we are on the final countdown to the Australian Grand Prix.

Ask Carla: Baku disaster Dear Aunty Carla What a terrible weekend in Baku! I just can’t believe it. We went into qualifying feeling pretty confident we could get pole, but then in Q3 Oscar found the wall, which meant he couldn’t get higher up the grid that P9. So, all eyes were on Lando … could he do it? No. He clipped the wall, ruined his final lap and ended up in P7.

Ask Carla: Oh, I don’t like to be beside the seaside! Dear Aunty Carla Oh, my goodness. Were the stewards still on holiday mode last week at Zandvoort? They must have had drunk a whole carafe of sangria each to come up with that totally bizarre 10-second penalty they slapped me with. I was having a great race, really pushing the Williams to the limit, and then I made a move on Liam Lawson to move up the order.

Ask Carla: A bitter pill to swallow Dear Aunty Carla Hungary was my moment of the season to shine. I put the car on pole, led comfortably, and for a while, everything felt in control. Then, without warning, the car became undriveable, I was losing seconds a lap, slipping backwards, and no matter what I did, nothing worked. I was furious. I said things on the radio I meant in the heat of the moment, but later I wasn’t sure if I’d gone too far.

Ask Carla: Under Pressure Dear Aunty Carla I can’t believe that I messed up last week. I was going faster than Oscar, and with Papaya rules that meant we could race, and we do like having that opportunity. But after a few laps trying unsuccessfully to pass, I thought I’d try and out-fox Oscar and duck down the left-hand side. Big mistake. Huge! I kinda, no, I totally mis-judged the space available, and ended up half on the grass, half off, tapping the back of Oscar’s car and punting myself along the wall and out of the race.

Ask Carla: Sun, Sea, and S-angry-a Oh dear, darling Max, we let the red mist descend last week in Spain, didn’t we? Understandable really, after that safety car pitstop when your team put you on hard tyres … … and when you questioned the choice, your concerns were brushed aside. Then, on the restart, you had to make an incredible save when those said hard tyres made you look like Bambi on ice.

Ask Carla: What a difference a week makes … Dear Aunty Carla Urgh, last weekend in Bahrain was definitely not ‘simply lovely’. Sixth place! Sixth place … it’s not on … I’m used to things going my way, getting pole, and winning … this feels like I’ve gone back in time, and I don’t like it. I don’t like it at all.
