Perseid meteor going from Pisces to Pegasus.
A green and orange Perseid meteor passes close to the Milky Way in Cygnus.
Perseid meteor in Ursa Major with aurora.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - August was very good for observing the Perseids meteor shower this year. Here are the best meteors I captured this month. The aurora even made an appearance! #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - on 6-7 August I spent a night stargazing on the North York Moors, catching some early Perseid meteors, doing some #Astrophotography and I even caught some late noctilucent clouds! Watch my video of the night: youtu.be/QB-9J5LYf14 #Astronomy2024
Shot of early morning electric blue noctilucent clouds against a blue sky.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - July was pretty cloudy but the noctilucent clouds continued to be visible. Here's a shot I got on the morning of 4 July. #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - there was another good NLC display on 23-24 June. Why were we getting such intense activity though? One possibility was water vapour entering the mesosphere from the Tonga volcanic eruption in 2022. youtu.be/SqxdTivUSLU #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - one of the best noctilucent cloud displays I've ever seen occurred on 17-18 June. The 'mountain' of NLCs at the end of the display was an extraordinary thing to see. Watch my video of the display: youtu.be/sNjlTD-ccfA #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - June saw the start of noctilucent clouds season. There were predictions that this year would be a poor one for NLCs, due to high solar activity. Events would prove otherwise, starting on 12-13 June: youtu.be/MvJQfhJ1LP8 #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - the month of May was very cloudy but it was clear for that one incredible night on 10th to 11th. Words can't describe the aurora that evening so just watch my video instead (and like and subscribe, thanks!): youtu.be/syR_IxxiCak #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024

Faint red pillars of an aurora display in the northern night sky.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - On 23 March I caught some faint aurora on camera. Was this a sign of things to come? 😃 #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
A multi-coloured, swirling line against a dark background. These are the colours produced by light from the bright star Sirius passing through our turbulent atmosphere. Moving the camera a little while taking a long exposure of Sirius helps to bring out the rainbow of colours. In effect, this technique 'freezes' the twinkling of Sirius to show all the colours on display. It is a fairly easy thing to do with basic camera equipment, that produces beautiful results.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - Also in February, I managed my customary capture of the twinkling of Sirius 😀 #Astrophotography #SciArt #Astronomy2024
Picture of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks in the constellation of Andromeda. The comet is a green fuzzy ball with a hint of a tail.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - February was pretty poor for #Astrophotography due to the weather, but I did manage a capture of comet 12P/Pons-Brooks. #Astronomy2024
Picture of supernova 2024gy in galaxy NGC 4216. Kit: Evostar 72ED scope with unmodified Canon 250D DSLR on Star Adventurer mount. Settings: Best 80% of 47 stacked images at 420mm fl, f/5.8, 13s exp at ISO-3200, cropped.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - Supernova 2024gy in NGC 4216 on 31 January. Amazing to think that tiny dot is an exploding star in a galaxy 55 million light-years away! #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
The blue-white stars of the Pleiades open cluster in Taurus. Kit: Evostar 72ED scope with unmodified Canon 250D DSLR on Star Adventurer mount. Settings: 83 stacked images at 420mm fl, f/5.8, 20s exp at ISO-3200.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - the best shot of the Pleiades I've managed to date, taken on 17-18 January. Pleased to have picked up some decent nebulosity. #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
The Orion Nebula and Running Man Nebula in Orion. I used an Evostar 72ED scope with unmodified Canon 250D DSLR on Star Adventurer mount. Settings: 56 stacked images at 420mm fl, f/5.8, 20s exp at ISO-3200.
My #Astronomy highlights from 2024 - The Orion Nebula and Running Man Nebula from 14-15 January. #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024
A long exposure star trails picture. The star trails are different coloured arcing lines circling a central point near the top of the image. There is a rooftop in the foreground.
It's been a great year for amateur #Astronomy so I'll be posting some of my highlights over the next few days. First one - on the night of 14-15 January there was a clear sky all night so I was able to take this very long star trails shot (11 hours 11 minutes). #Astrophotography #Astronomy2024

Some pictures from #astronomy2024 #iauga2024 in Cape Town last week. I gave a talk and two posters and also enjoyed the exhibits and other talks. Was great. 🔭👩🔬
Home. Thankfully the trip back was significantly easier than the one out. Turns out when it’s not cancelled the direct Cape Town to Washington DC route works great. #astronomy2024
The Fantastic cultural performers on stage with the IAU GA 2024 logo on a screen behind.
The cultural performers on the IAU stage with the lyrics to the song they were singing on the screen.
Outside the CTICC Auditorium with the cultural performers interacting with the Astro crowd
And that’s a wrap for #astronomy2024! It was fantastic! Thank you IAU and Cape Town!
Now we get a symposium summary from Thijs van der Hulst who starts by talking about how his career has spanned the entirety of resolved observations of HI in galaxies (so far). #astronomy2024 🔭
Guimarães-Silva is working with a sample of 20 nearby void galaxies observed with Wallaby (an Australian SKA pathfinder survey). It’s not many - but the thing about voids is they don’t have many galaxies. #astronomy2024 🔭👩🔬
