Figure 3: Map of BC with dialysis modality percentage prevalence by health authority (March 2024). The uptake of home dialysis in rural and remote communities remains high, even in the face of significant climate and infrastructure challenges. For patients living in these areas, geographic isolation often presents a difficult choice: relocating to a major centre to access in-centre dialysis or adopting home dialysis. Given this context, many patients are drawn to the opportunity to manage their treatment in the comfort of their own homes. This preference not only allows them to maintain their independence and connection to their communities but also highlights the resilience and adaptability of patients in overcoming logistical barriers. Home dialysis offers a lifeline for those seeking to balance their healthcare needs with the desire to stay rooted in their environment, illustrating the critical importance of supporting and expanding home-based care options for rural and remote populations.
