Step back in time at No 16, #Biddenden Post Office – a Grade II listed timber-framed building with 17th-century origins and a classic tiled roof. Its first-floor tile-hanging adds a touch of historic charm, showcasing the craftsmanship of earlier centuries.

Shown here is a photograph titled 'Distribution of bread and cheese to the poor (?) at Biddenden on Easter Bank Holiday', 22nd April 1935.

It’s taken from a diary [ref. U2540/F2] kept by Dr Bernard Richardson Billings (1883-1983) who was born in Hackney but lived and practised in Folkestone for many years before emigrating to Australia in 1964, where he celebrated his 100th birthday.

In his diary entries, Dr Billings comments not only on his own life and his family but also reflects on national and international events. Many photographs of varying size and subject can be found amongst his writing, capturing everything from Kentish landmarks and caravan holidays to panoramic scenes. Collectively, they highlight his interest in history, genealogy, and architecture.

Residents of #Biddenden in 1935, receiving an #Easter Monday offering of cheese and bread; the latter impressed with the image of conjoined twins Elizabeth and Mary Chulkhurst... but why? 🧀 🍞
