Pirate Taxi acrobat suspended upside down in a hoop hanging off a ladder on top on their taxi as they drive through Ballydehob in the world famous jazz parade.
From beneath a huge ginger afro a wonky smiling face. The afro is real. As too, is the smile.
In ‘mime’ make-up two smilers wait to start in the parade. Centre a woman with a black beret and turtleneck top. To her right a man, slightly out of focus with a black hat and shirt. Behind them colourful oversized puppets wait in line.
Stephanie Nilles smiles at us. Standing in front of the piano as the audience applauds her incredible performance in Levis Corner House front room on Sunday morning.
One of the many standout things about photographing this year’s Ballydehob Jazz Festival was the amount of eye contact and with it the smiles.
Friends & strangers seeing each other. 🙃👏👏

An audience circles an old London Taxi with a pivoting rotating ’ladder’ balanced in its rooftop. At each end one performer acts as counter weight to the the other performing aerial acrobatics as she rises and rotates above the heads of the crowd. Seen here she is suspended horizontally between two lengths of draping red fabric suspended from the end of the ladder high above the taxi and audience.
A wide view: The time the acrobat is suspended in a hoop above the audience.
This the time the acrobat is suspended, upside down in a hoop above the audience.
Portrait view, from the top the red fabric hangs from top to bottom of the image with the acrobat upside down doing the splits like a human knot in the fabric.
The sun shone & the temperature rose for the Pirate Taxi Circus at the Ballydehob Jazz Festival.

A smiling Stephanie, her head tilted facing us, left hand on the keyboard. A side view. Her back in blue light at the right, warm tones to the left of the image.
Stephanie mid vocal at the keyboard. Pinks light up her arms and face, yellow & blue lights catching her hair.

Caz swings around, her hair flaring out, in the centre surround by musicians & choir members. The room is full & spirits are high.
At the back of the room in the audience: Seen from above, composer and musician Benji kneels down to get a hug from Lenny the dog, both paws on his shoulders while the band plays on.
Tonight’s headliner Stephanie taking it all in. (Friday 3rd).

Through the window from top down: a hand holds up 3 photos strung together to be hung and displayed during the Ballydehob Jazz Festival. The non-exhibition hodgepodge aspect suits the location, Mary Margaret’s shop. The shop has been closed for a couple of years now. But it lives on fondly in local memory as ‘the place to go for that random odd sized battery you can’t find anywhere else’ vibe. A shop since 1915. An absolute honour for me, to have my work shown here facing the street where the photos were taken alongside Mollie’s painting.
Through the window from the left pane, Stephen’s hands and face caught by the sun, adjusts the ‘cat-gut’ while Caroline holds the painting by Mollie Douthit from the shadows, her foot visible on the window shelf of the right pane for support. Day One: Ballydehob Jazz Festival, Thurs 02 May 2024. 📷
Down at Mary Margaret’s a painting by friend Mollie Douthit is hung in 1 window and 6 of my own photos from past festivals are hung in the other by Stephen & Caroline.
