Systemic racism throughout the South. There has got to be an endpoint where We The People stand together and overcome. In the end it has to involve ALL OF US TO SAVE US ALL!!

So, thank you.

My favorite thing about #DouglassDay is that everyone can find something that they are interested in to transcribe. Someone who is a pianist is transcribing sheet music he found. Someone else who wrote their diss on The Brownies', is transcribing issues of the magazine.

Aerial view of London, 1850

Faced with growing pressure and hostility in the United States due to the political climate and his outspoken abolitionist views, Henry "Box" Brown made the bold decision to move to England in 1850. The passing of the **Fugitive Slave Act** and the increasing danger of being recaptured by slave catchers made it increasingly difficult for him to remain in the U.S. as a free man, especially given his prominence as a former enslaved person and vocal critic of slavery. The atmosphere in the U.S. was increasingly hostile to abolitionists, and Brown, knowing that his activism could put him at risk, sought refuge in England, where slavery had already been abolished.

In England, Brown found a more supportive and sympathetic audience for his anti-slavery work. He continued his work as an activist, delivering lectures about his experiences as a slave, his dramatic escape, and the brutal realities of slavery in the U.S. Brown's story resonated deeply with British audiences, and he was welcomed as a hero in many cities. He toured across England and Scotland, speaking to a range of audiences, including abolitionists, religious groups, and ordinary citizens, urging them to join the fight for emancipation. His time in England allowed him to further solidify his place as an influential figure in the global abolitionist movement, while also offering him a greater sense of safety and freedom to continue advocating for the end of slavery.
