Image of a mixed media canvas on an easel. The painting, by Tracey Norman, depicts Bette Davis as Baby Jane Hudson in the 1962 horror movie 'Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?' which also starred Joan Crawford as Jane's sister Blanche. The background is a dark purple around the central image of Jane looking distastefully out towards the viewer. Around this, beads, keys, small wooden houses, a fragment of the sheet music for 'I've Written a Letter to Daddy' (Jane's signature tune in her child star days), fabric, and hessian roses form a partial border. A locket lower left is open, revealing photos of Jane and Blanche. The items used in the collage aspect of the artwork were all inspired by the movie, and the depiction of Jane uses a very limited colour palette based on a blown-out still of Jane looking out of the barred window in Blanche's bedroom. The purple background has DADDY repeated over and over in every free space, subtly adding a claustrophobic feel to the piece, echoing the claustrophobia of Jane's relationship with Blanche.
Finally finished the second canvas in my (currently untitled) series of #horror greats. #BetteDavis as #BabyJane will join #BorisKarloff as #Frankenstein. Next to tackle is #GaryOldman as #Dracula. So many ideas for this one already! #ArtSky #WomenInArt #MixedMedia #HorrorSky
