A bright summer day at the shore of Lake Chuzenji. A pair of Buddhist pilgrims in traditional white garments and sedge hats, with one wearing a straw cape, approach a torii gate standing on the shore of the lake. Beyond, a little wooden ferry has only just left, five passengers occupying the low flat boat while the pilot stands at the stern, steering with a long oar. The pilgrims will have to wait for the next one. Further out, a little sailboat crosses the flat, blue water; low, forest-covered mountains populate the horizon on the other side of the lake. Chuzen-ji is one of the thirty-three temples on the Bando Sanjusankasho pilgrimage route.
