5. Right Story, Wrong Story by Tyson Yunkaporta (2025)
6. Soul Design by Dr. Linda Backman (2025)
I loved this month, it was a good mix of the material, the surreal, & the supernatural (which to me is just natural). I'm late with #BannedBookSky this month but Frankenstein is in progress!

The Pulitzer Prize got it right the year this was selected. Beautiful writing & a story I will continue to think about. I'm quite certain that I will read it again. Thanks to @retired-librarian.bsky.social for introducing it as one of the #BannedBooks #BannedBookSky #BookSky #52books #52bookchallenge
@retired-librarian.bsky.social Found this on Google & it made me feel better. I could not tell what race the women were & felt I had missed something. TM didn’t identify the race of the women in the convent to confront the tendency to use race for immediate characterization. #BookSky #BannedBookSky
An infographic of a poster explaining about a discord server called Between the Covers. It features a logo that says Between the Covers: Read Freely. We offer a safe place for ages 25+, a variety of channels, and monthly books picks. It further explains that we are a basic server with no toxicity, no excessive channels, opt in roles, and a welcoming environment.
WELP I did it!
Several people have asked, and so I created my own bookish discord! How about giving us a lil join? We are BRAND NEW and still under construction, but we'd love to have you! #booksky #bannedbooksky #bookish #discord #books #read

Thank you, and likewise!
Would you like if we tracked #BannedBookSky on our own, and people who use the system could follow along with your recommendations?
That would be pretty easy for us to set up, with no work for you.
Seeing your December pick was our literal inspiration to create this.
It's a very simple lexicon, early in development.
We welcome feedback and curiosity!
Would love to see new #authors #writers and #booksky folk start self-storing their library records, or have some fun sending reading lists to one another.
@retired-librarian.bsky.social lets add #bannedbooksky!!

Just finished Parable of the Sower—bleak, brutal, and absolutely gripping. The world is terrifyingly real, the characters unforgettable. Not for the faint of heart, but I couldn’t look away. Picking up Parable of the Talents soon. #blackbooksky #bannedbooksky 💙📚🪐
The #BannedBookSky discussion of Banned Book Club is starting today and we are lucky to have author @ryanestrada.com chiming in! It’s a fast read, so join in!
Just finished The Complete Maus by Art Spiegelman. So gripping, enthralling, brutal, and real … and a comic! Almost feels like a documentary… first hand account of the holocaust… should be mandatory reading … 5-stars 💙📚 #bannedbooksky
The best solution is to not buy from Amazon. But, I'm sure we have all purchased in the past. Download your books while you still can! #booksky #bannedbooksky

My library hold came in right in time for February's #bannedbooksky club.
Quite a few people here use the hashtag #bannedbooksky when referring to banned books, and there's this feed as well (in case you or your followers aren't already aware of these things) bsky.app/profile/reti...

White text on blue background: “What happens when books get banned? Quite simply, they get removed from public libraries and school. Kids, (particularly BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and disabled children), who are most impacted by this, will lose access to information that’s important to being able to see themselves in media and for others to be able to see the experiences of others which is important for the development of empathy.“
White text on blue background: “Why book banning matters. Book banning affects more than just kids. It affects librarians, educators, authors, and readers. It allows for any one opinion or viewpoint to dominate and discourages diversity, inclusion, and freedom of speech and expression. It also erases societies, history, and the lived experiences of people (esp. BIPOC, LQBTQ+, & disabled).“
White text on blue background: “What can I do about it? According to PEN America & the ALA. 1. Stay informed & speak out. Follow your local libraries, PEN America, and report any local book banning to the American Library Association. 2. Create and support organizations. Create community, support your local library, support organizations like the ALA, Unite Against Book Bans, SCBWI, PEN America, Teacher’s College, etc. 3. Get involved locally. Vote and demand your local representative to take a stand against book bans. Don’t forget to participate in smaller elections and primaries. 4. Buy of check out challenged books. The easiest way to support free access to banned books is by checking them out at the library to show that these books are a valuable asset. If libraries aren’t accessible, do what works for you! Private collections will be the last line of defense, SHARE them anyway. 5. READ READ READ.”

White text on blue background: “What is a banned book? Often times the term banned is used interchangeably with a book that was either challenged, censored, restricted, or banned. Why? Often the reason behind them is to ‘protect the kids,’ & these most often target public libraries and public schools. These complaints are very often done by a few people with large batches of books.”
White text on blue background: “What is a challenged book? A challenged book is an attempt to censor, restrict, or ban a book. How? To do this, someone has to file a complaint, usually based on the content of the book (issues like sex, gender issues, violence, discussions on race or sexuality, criticism of gov.). After that, the book & complaint go to a review board/committee to be evaluated against guidelines. Depending on the county/city/state, they will sometimes do a public hearing where the challenger & those against the challenge can present their arguments. Then the review body will decide on it. Depending on the outcome, a book can be restricted or banned.”
White text on blue background: “What is a restricted book? Restricting a book can mean it’s moved sections or shelves that make acquiring it more difficult or requiring parental permission. Like moving a book from YA to adult, as was the case for This Book is Gay at library in Fremont. Or it could mean a book is placed in a locked case, or ‘adult only’ or ‘restricted’ shelves. This is also a form of CENSORING.”
Before I get into posting about the lesser know banned books, I figured it might be important to talk about what it means to be a banned book & what we can do about it (part 2).
