Victoria’s Barwon River at low tide: the water’s as blue as the clear summer sky, ruffled by a brisk easterly breeze. A clean golden beach on the far bank is backed by native bush and low dunes. On the sandbars, in the water, everywhere you look, swans. As I watched, five adult swans spread their white-lined wings and launched from the sandbar: they flew low over the water towards the far bank, then turned left and continued upstream until they were out of sight. A few minutes later, five adult birds came sailing swiftly down the river and stepped out of the water onto the same sandbar. I suspect them of mooching, just having fun.
