A Gasthaus in West Virginia There is something mildly audacious about Bavaria overlooking the Potomac. Shepherdstown , anchored quietly by   Shepherd University , does ...

Early December above the Potomac. Staff in Bavarian garb, Jaeger Schnitzel that made me miss Schwaben, and gloriously vinegary German potato salad.
A Bavarian lodge in WV shouldn’t work. It does.

Bavarian Inn's $90 million waterpark is ready for guests. Here's what it offers What's claimed to be Michigan's biggest indoor waterpark will finally open in Frankenmuth on Friday, two seasons later than originally intended. Bavarian Blast Waterpark's soft launch will allow guests at the Bavarian Inn to stay overnight and have limited day access to the park starting at 10 a.m. The waterpark encourages guests to book online. The attraction was originally planned to open in fall 2024; workers broke ground on the project in December 2022. The $90 million expansion, taking up three football fields of space, will feature 16 new water slides, a lazy river, wave pool and private cabanas. “Throughout the four generations of leadership at Bavarian Inn, our mission has always been to create enjoyable experiences," Michael Keller Zehnder, the lodge's president, said in a news release. "This expansion stands as a testament to our continuous dedication to this pursuit." Bavarian Blast Waterpark claims to have the state's first dual-mat racing water slides, built by WhiteWater West, and the first swim-up bar in Michigan, where visitors will be able to lounge in a heated indoor-outdoor pool year-round. The property also has new dining and beverage experiences, including a quick-service café, a smoothie bar and a bar serving snacks and alcoholic beverages. The project also brings several additions to the lodge's family fun center, including a ropes course, rock climbing walls, mini bowling, 180-plus arcade games, laser tag, a Build-a-Bear Workshop and an ice cream and candy store. The 170,000-square-foot German Oktoberfest-themed park is the seventh major expansion at Bavarian Inn since the facility was opened by the Zehnder family in 1986. The waterpark accounts for roughly 125,000 square feet and is expected to create 71 jobs. Want to comment on this story? Become a subscriber today.
