Canelo, Bivol Avoidance Pushes Benavidez to Historic Cruiserweight Clash David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez will make history next Cinco de Mayo weekend when he faces WBA and WBO Cruiserweight Champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in the first-ever world cruiserweight title clash between two Mexican warriors. Fresh off a seventh-round TKO of Anthony Yarde in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) will step into the T-Mobile Arena ring on May 2, 2026, to challenge Ramirez (48-1, 30 KOs). The bout gives “The Mexican Monster” a shot at the cruiserweight crown, potentially adding a third-division world title to his legacy and cementing his place among boxing’s elite. Benavidez’s Cruiserweight Path While some fans had hoped Benavidez would unify the light heavyweight division against IBF, WBA, and WBO champion Dmitry Bivol or face former IBF champion Artur Beterbiev, his promoter, Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing, clarified the reasoning: “After waiting so long for Canelo Alvarez, only to have him avoid us at all costs, David will wait for no one ever again,” Lewkowicz said. “We offered Bivol $8 million last year, and he chose to vacate the WBC title a day before a scheduled purse bid rather than face him. “Beterbiev is coming off a loss, so other than money, he brings nothing to the table. David wanted the winner of the rematch, not the loser. David would stop Beterbiev. No doubt in my mind, and he has already dropped Bivol with headgear and big gloves. “David is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, but he won’t talk about it. He will show it, fight after fight.” Lewkowicz also reassured fans about Benavidez’s path to future unification: “The WBA has guaranteed us that David is the mandatory for the Bivol/Beterbiev winner,” he added. “Bivol will have to act like a ‘Russian Canelo’ and vacate another title to avoid facing David. “He doesn’t want to fight because he knows when they sparred, David put a beating on him and dropped him. He has zero chance of beating David. That I promise you, he has no power to keep David off him, and he will take a brutal beating!” Champion Across Divisions Benavidez has held the WBC Light Heavyweight Title since April 2025. He previously captured the WBC super middleweight title twice between 2017 and 2020. Claiming his first world title at 20 years and eight months, he remains the youngest super middleweight world champion in history. With the cruiserweight crown on the line, Benavidez is set to take over Cinco de Mayo in a showdown fans won’t forget. Ramirez Confirms Benavidez Fight — But There’s a Title Twist Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez has finally broken his silence: the unified world cruiserweight champion will face undefeated, two-division world champion David “The Mexican Monster” Benavidez on Saturday, May 2, in Las Vegas. What makes this fight even more remarkable is the twist — Benavidez claimed the date long linked to a potential Canelo Alvarez vs. Terence Crawford rematch, securing Cinco de Mayo weekend for a historic all-Mexican cruiserweight showdown. May 2 Mayhem: Benavidez Steals the Spotlight “It will be your classic Mexican versus Mexican/American war,” Ramirez said. “I’m familiar with David and his team — they’re great people, but business is business. Come May, I will have my arm raised.” Ramirez’s Road Back The 34-year-old resumed training last month at Brickhouse Boxing Club in North Hollywood following right shoulder surgery in July. However, before taking on Benavidez, Ramirez will defend his WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles against unbeaten Robin Sirwan Safar (19-0, 13 KOs) on January 16 in Palm Desert, California. Safar, a Swedish-born Las Vegas resident, earned his shot by upsetting five-time world champion Sergey Kovalev in 2024. He recently defeated previously unbeaten Derick Miller Jr. Ramirez’s January bout will mark his 50th professional fight. Benavidez: A Mexican-American Monster on the Rise Benavidez, 28, hails from Phoenix but holds dual Mexican citizenship. Fresh off a seventh-round stoppage of Anthony Yarde, he has beaten several former champions, including Demetrius Andrade and Oleksandr Gvozdyk. Moving up to cruiserweight, Benavidez isn’t just chasing a title — he’s rewriting the division’s narrative and beating Canelo to the punch. The Title Twist Beyond belts, this bout is legacy, national pride, and global intrigue wrapped into one. Ramirez dismissed talk of IBF champion Jai Opetaia: “I want the biggest fights possible. To be honest, I didn’t even know who Opetaia was until recently. All these outbursts and lies remind me of my exes.” A Mexican Fight That Matters WBN sees Benavidez vs. Ramirez as the leading Mexican-descent bout since Erik Morales vs. Marco Antonio Barrera in 2010. Ramirez defends his cruiserweight legacy, while Benavidez can cement his reputation as a multi-division powerhouse. The May 2 timing adds unprecedented media and promotional attention, elevating both fighters’ global profiles. By the final bell, the winner will hold two belts at 200 pounds — and be primed for a massive run at the undisputed crown.
