A postcard which has a picture of a CPR steamship which is black and white with two yellow and black funnels. The words Empress of Ireland 1914-2014 are underneath. At the other side there is a lighthouse and relevant places plotted on a map such as Pointe-au-Pere. Above that is a Canada Post stamp

Today is #WorldMaritimeDay and a great excuse to remember the #EmpressofIreland, the CPR liner that sank in 1914 and claimed four more passenger lives than the Titanic. There were 75 passengers onboard from BC - only 10 returned #shipwreck #beneathdarkwaters

Photo of a group of men and two women standing outside the Landeau Hotel in Comaplix, BC around 1914. The hotel has a Ladies Entrance and is a simple building. Freda Evans is standing in the front row and wearing a long dress ran the hostel with her husband Russell. She was travelling on the Empress of Ireland, but did not survive the sinking.

"Of the many places that victims of the #EmpressofIreland disaster came from, one of the most obscure was Comaplix, a sawmill town in BC," writes Greg Nesteroff. "Freda Evans, 27 ran the Lardeau Hotel with her husband Russell."

Loved my store visit and signing at Volume One Books in #Duncan yesterday! Thanks so much to everyone who dropped by to say hello! This is Sue - her grandfather was John Langley who lived in Merritt, BC and survived the sinking of the #Empressofireland in 1914 and WW1! #beneathdarkwaters #shipwreck

Empress of Ireland I gave the first talk about the Empress of Ireland at Black Bond Books in Ladner Thursday night, and several descendants came

I gave a talk about my new book #BeneathDarkWaters at @blackbondbooks.bsky.social in #Ladner on Thursday. Few people have heard of the #EmpressofIreland, a CPR liner that sank in 1914. This crowd not only knew about the #shipwreck but most had a relative onboard evelazarus.com/empress-of-i...

The cover of the book "Beneath Dark Waters" by Eve Lazarus, with stacked text above reading, "Happy book birthday!", along with the book title and author's name. Below, footer text lists the publisher, Arsenal Pulp Press, and their website, arsenal pulp dot com. Taking up the top half of the cover is the book title, “Beneath Dark Waters,” against a grey background. A collage of handwritten letters made to resemble a turquoise ocean takes up the bottom half. Passing through the centre of the ocean is a black and white photo of the Empress of Ireland, a large ship. At the bottom, laid over the ocean, is the subtitle, “The Legacy of the Empress of Ireland Shipwreck,” and the author’s name, “Eve Lazarus.”

New from reporter & author Eve Lazarus, #BeneathDarkWaters is an epic chronicle of the #EmpressOfIreland shipwreck, which claimed the lives of more passengers than the Titanic & stands as the worst maritime disaster during peacetime in Canadian history.
