I love berry picking with my family and finding wild foods. I adore these books and I love that there are Indigenous writers sharing their traditions. One day I will write my own #BerryPickingBooks and I hope to begin to approach the splendor of these! Please reblog this thread and add recs!
Please chime in with your favorite #BerryPickingBooks or foraging books. I love berry picking and have many attempts at picture books about this. One day I will write one! I think gathering food is such an intimate and personal thing, it lends itself to writing picture books.
Cover of One More Jar of Jam, written by Michelle Sumovich and Illustrated by Gracey Zhang. A girl in a mulberry tree.
Last one on my list, ONE MORE JAR OF JAM, by Michelle Sumovich and Gracey Zhang, 2023. A girl with a mulberry tree in her yard and the aftermath of its falling. Included because I can't resist a ripe mulberry off the tree, even though this is not a foraging book!

Cover of book BERRY SONG, with a woman and girl surrounded by berry bushes. Caldecott Medalist Michaela Goade. There are two silver medals on the cover.
A new favorite, BERRY SONG by Michaela Goade, from 2022. A Tlingit girl and her grandmother in the Alaskan islands gather berries throughout summer and reflect on their connection to the earth.

this one is REALLY touching. And a Caldecott Honor Book!
cover of the book JAMBERRY by Bruce Degen, with a boy and bear jumping with berry filled hats, and bordered in berries.
Another classic is Bruce Degen's JAMBERRY, from 1999. A little boy and bear rhyme their way through picking blueberries, strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries.
I loved blackberry picking as a kid... and still do as an adult.

I'm going to do a little thread on examples of my favorite hyper specific genre of picture book, and hopefully spark a little discussion and people sharing other examples too! my first attempt to start a #kidlit convo on here.
