The reduction in isolation time from 7 to 5 days in Australia needs to be accompanied by the beginnings of a sustainable cultural shift to mask wearing when unwell or when a close contact. In VIC we should be leveraging the #bettermasks programs at testing centres.🧵
People seem to still be looking for a single, no collective effort solution to pandemics. It’s not cleaner air, #bettermasks, vaccines, hand hygiene, TTIQ, or paid sick leave, it’s all of them. It’s a collective effort of multiple interventions, not just “protect yourself”.
Not sure how to say this any more more clearly.
Invest heavily in reducing transmission risk (#bettermasks, better indoor air), or leave gathering/travel restrictions & TTIQ as our only tools when faced with a novel respiratory tract virus for which we have no effective vaccine.

It may be wishful thinking, but I feel like there’s been a uptick in the proportion of my patients coming into hospital wearing #bettermasks. Nothing fancy, just much better than the floppy blues, and I make a point of congratulating them on their decision.
To those who say:

It's only a cold.
We must learn to live with it.
It's harmless to kids.
It impinges on my freedom.

In January this year Austria handed out free FFP2 respirators, simply put these are masks that are designed to fit & filter, & mandated their use on public transport and other indoor settings.

It may seem low yield to Victorians given we may begin lifting restrictions soon, but it’s time we push additive risk mitigation measures like indoor air quality (ventilation + filtration) and #bettermasks, seeing them as ways to reduce the probability & duration of restrictions.
