Maryland electricity customers are facing potential bill increases stemming from the upcoming 2025/2026 capacity auction, a mechanism used by electricity providers to secure power supply. Early projections indicated an average increase of $16 per month for BGE customers, but state officials are actively working to reduce this figure.
The potential rise is linked to a concerning trend across the PJM region (Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland): a decreasing supply of electricity paired with rising demand. This imbalance is influenced by several factors including longstanding state and federal policies, the expanding presence of data centers, the increasing adoption of electric vehicles and electric heating systems, and a resurgence in U.S. manufacturing. Simultaneously, Maryland has experienced the retirement of a significant portion of its power generation capacity while comparatively limited new resources have been added. The state also depends heavily on electricity imported from other states, historically around 40% of its needs.
PJM, the regional transmission organization responsible for managing the electricity grid, defends the auction rules, asserting that they were approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and accurately reflect the current market conditions. They are collaborating with companies like Google and Tapestry, utilizing artificial intelligence, to improve regional planning and grid interconnection.
Maryland is engaging with both PJM and FERC to explore solutions and mitigate the potential financial burden on residents. The state's request to FERC centers on the argument that the auction procedures were unfair, and a favorable ruling could reduce the anticipated monthly increase to $6.
