An adult Ash-Throated flycatcher delivers a bug to it's nestlings
A messy looking birds nest made of bits of string and tattered fabric is set in the steel wire framework of an old windsock.
Three grey nestlings huddle together in the mix of metal and rubberized orange fabric
The wind sock screeched like a lost banshee whenever the wind direction shifted and spun it in a different direction, a telltale for the firefighters on duty that the wind had changed.
Didn't seem to bother the birds at all...
Every year at a USFS duty station an Ash-Throated raised its brood in a windsock at the helicopter landing pad.
The station manager made sure the battered orange sock was properly raised each season, like clockwork the flycatchers would show up a few days later.
