My son is ending his first semester as a PhD—I’m ~18 months post. The greatest gift is being present while he pulls an all-nighter: offering snacks, encouragement, & space to bounce ideas. He’s writing at the intersection of punk + trap music, poetry, & Afro-futurism.

However, I dare state that an even larger enclosure had occurred while our heads were buried in the proverbial sands. In the early 2000s, America experienced its first true cultural age where in fashions, technology, social cultures, and consumer products all mainly came from the nation and territories where it had significant influence. Such is understandable afterall the nation was only a little older than 2 centuries. During this cultural boom, distinctly american fashion for both male and female populations of different ages were codified. An older woman might perhaps be found in a skirt suit, bobbed hair and a string of pearls echoing the 1960s-80s where a massive influx of female workers poured into the american corporate structure. Teen girls meanwhile would be spotted in shoulder length hair, jeans and perhaps a cropped spaghetti strap top exposing the midriff which screamed with the newly won egalitarian feminist views of the 90s.
Adult men, on the other hand, wore suits as they had for generations while their younger counterparts could be spotted in baggy jeans, a t-shirt; bobbed, shoulder length, or short hair; and sometimes an inner long sleeve stripped shirt. This young male fashion echoed the inclusion of African Americans into public media, a right won and held steadfast from the 1980s till later in around 2010.

All this to say, artistic expression in the public majority a.k.a. Culture was thriving. We see now in today’s youth, a nostalgia for that time which accompanies greater social pressures such as climate changes, heat waves, extinction events, crippling commodity prices, housing unavailability, threats of and execution of wars and gen*ci*es.
Between the times of the early 2000s and today, life-sustaining commodities such as food, housing, and healthcare became enclosed upon as status markers for the upper crust.

A Document titled 'The Great Enclosure'
By Meelou

Reading Philis Wheatly, I began to ponder on the nature of learning. I thought to myself that there was so much to learn and was consoled in the knowledge that many have known much more than I. So, for sure, such a feat as ever expanding knowledge was possible. It then crossed my mind that a very small number of them had access to social media and the internet as I. I consoled myself once more in the knowledge that I spent most of my time in edutainment; watching, documentaries, retrospectives, and historical ‘whatsits’, rather than in trivial, substanceless entertainments.
It then dawned on me, however, that I read more now than I ever have in my life. Stick with me dear reader for I shall now impart on you my belief that reading –and indeed, all things human, have now become enclosed by the upper classes as status markers.

In 18xx, Alaafin George III of the English empire, known best for running mad and losing England’s ‘American colonies’, enclosed the common people’s public farmlands, the commons.

Now, since this is simply an impromptu, one day essay fuelled by the гламурный трафарет (transl. Glamorous stencil) that is Mz. Wheatley, there shall be little to no references. I would refer you to my old work but none of it is published.

Anyhow, the commons; vast tracts of farmland open to the public, where farmers could graze their animals, plant crops and forage for food, were; by order of Alaafin george, enclosed upon and handed to the already landed gentry. Word on the street is that he did this because he liked to farm.
George, who had been known as ‘the farmer king’ for his love of farming, instead of appreciating and fraternising with actual farmers in order to cultivate his hobby with greater depth, and perhaps even benefit those who practiced before him, he instead destroyed their capability to practice and subsequently their ability to feed their families for whatever sordid reason. ... 1/2

As a Black scholar studying how anti-Blackness impacts health, I’m deeply concerned about what this upcoming administration means for evidence-based science and research funding.

But my ancestors resisted, and so will I. We will keep telling the truth, no matter what. #HealthEquity #BlackAcademia
