Black-tailed Deer Amidst Ferns A Columbian black-tailed deer pauses to take a look at me before resuming its morning grazing along a fern-covered hillside in Cape Disappointment State Park in Washington. Horizontal color photograph: the female deer is standing amidst large green ferns. You can follow its body in from about the middle of the left side of the frame until you reach its head which is just to the right of the center of the frame, with it's eyes above the centerline of the image. The doe is brown furred, with a white path at her throat and chin, and a thin circle of white fur around he black nose. Her ears are perked up, and she's staring straight into the camera.

This photograph was taken on a hike in Sequoia National Park in 2015. The focal point is a black-tailed deer that is Central in the composition and making direct eye contact with the viewer/ photographer. It has an alert and intense stare and antlers are a fuzzy soft texture. To the left of the deer are two large trees, which I believe to be sugar pines. Almost the entire background of the image is filled with a house sized moss-covered boulder. I chose black and white for this photo because it emphasized the textures and helped the deer stand out from the noise of its surroundings. I think I'll always remember the moment of looking up and seeing this deer, and it looking up and seeing me. I was on guard on this hike because there are many, MANY bears in Sequoia National Park. Sensing another living being and spotting something so close before my brain registered what it was was an adrenaline rush.

A baby #BlackTailedDeer.

Deer will sometimes eat meat. They won’t hunt for it but if they find an injured or dead animal, they might feast on it. The calcium is helpful especially for antlers growing.
