This was a young #RedTailedHawk I encountered during one of my bird walks. I watched it catch a mouse just minutes after this photo was taken. RTHs can eat up to 4 rodents a day.

Deer will sometimes eat meat. They won’t hunt for it but if they find an injured or dead animal, they might feast on it. The calcium is helpful especially for antlers growing.

A bird with a straight black beak, a red cap, black back and wings, and a white front with black streaks on the chest.
The tongue of an #AcornWoodpecker is 3Xs the length of their beaks, and protects the brain from impacts by wrapping around it. Barbs at the end of the tongue helps with grabbing insects.
They kind of look like sloths with beaks 😆

I love the blue jewel eyes of the #DoubleCrestedCormorants. They look goofy but are skilled divers who can dive up to 25ft in depth. It is especially fun to watch them when they are in their mating plumage. Photos taken in March of 2025.
