I love Xenia as a concept of welcoming others but the expectation of gifts thing is so odd to me. Like Ody and his friends roll up to Polyphemus’ house and the only reason Ody convinces his friends not to rob Polyphemus is because he might give them gifts.

Not only is this a classic but it’s here because it was another school assignment to read. This reminds me as well, it’s like a lot of things in life that you don’t appreciate it at the time – my English teacher. Most of the kids used to groan about her because of the work she gave us. I can see now that without her, I would never have been introduced to the books in this list, and the absolute pleasures of reading. What a sadder life I would have had if not for the joy that reading brought into it. Thank you, teachers and all you writers, who bring so much to our lives – these are your super powers. :-)
