Books Unbanned | Brooklyn Public Library Recognizing Two Years of Books UnbannedIn April 2022, Brooklyn Public Library joined those fighting for the rights of teens nationwide to read what they like, discover themselves, and form their own opinions. Inspired by the American Library Association's Freedom to Read Statement, Books Unbanned is a response to an increasingly coordinated and effective effort to remove books from library shelves.

Brooklyn library began a movement in 2022 that has grown. Now other libraries have joined the movement to provide teens across the country with access to digital copies of these banned books.

Maya Angelou "I'm always sorry that people ban my books. Many times I've been called the most banned. Many times my books are banned by people who never read two sentences."

Book bans are often started by people that fear knowledge. And access is the key to unlocking potential. With book bans on the rise, it's vital to ensure students can access a diverse range of reading materials, from timeless classics to modern works.
